Allegiant Air emergency landing because of fire warning

Jet makes emergency landing at south Ga. airport

ALBANY, Ga. - More than 150 passengers made it off an Allegiant Air jet that made an emergency landing at a south Georgia airport, authorities said.

Police in Albany say they responded to reports of a possible fire in the cargo department of the plane shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday.

Concerns about the possible fire led the plane -- Allegiant Air flight 863 -- to make an emergency landing at Southwest Georgia Regional airport in Albany.

Passengers learned there was a problem when a harried flight attendant announced the plane was making an emergency landing, The Tampa Bay Times reported. The jet then made an "incredibly sudden stop" at Albany's small airport, said one passenger, retired Tampa Bay Times reporter Jeff Testerman.

Passengers were told to leave their belongings on board and slide down chutes that deployed at the front and back of the plane, he said.

All 155 passengers and 6 crew members got off the plane safely, WALB-TV reported.

"The pilots had an indication of a possible fire in the cargo hold," Allegiant spokesman Brian Davis said. "In an abundance of caution, they made the decision to land and get everyone off the plane."

It wasn't clear late Sunday whether there actually had been a fire.

The plane had taken off from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was scheduled to land in St. Petersburg, Fla., Davis said. Officials were planning to transport the passengers by bus to St. Petersburg, Davis said.

Albany is about 180 miles south of Atlanta.
So far I haven't seen any further news -- but it seems like the lessons of UPS-Dubai (land ASAP on fire warning) and Asiana-SFO (leave the hand luggage behind) were high in the crew's mind.

And let's not forget the MacDaddy of all cargo fires: ValuJet.

Nice job by the crew, however I'd be a little pissed if I had to take a bus from Albany, Ga to St. Pete...especially given the late hour. You know they probably didn't get on the road till after midnight...

False alarm caused Allegiant plane to make emergency landing

http://http://news.yahoo.com/false-a...ZRiHwAWXLQtDMD

Evidently a false alarm -- but handled quite correctly it would seem.

ATLANTA (Reuters) - The emergency landing in Georgia of an Allegiant Air flight late Sunday was caused by a false alarm when a warning light indicated a possible fire in the cargo hold, an airline spokesman said Monday.

There were no injuries and no evidence of a fire on the plane, which carried 155 passengers, Brian Davis, a spokesman for Las Vegas-based Allegiant, told Reuters.

The plane, an MD-80, was en route from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to St. Petersburg, Florida, when pilots made the emergency landing at Southwest Georgia Regional Airport in Albany at about 8:45 p.m. EDT, Davis said.

Passengers were evacuated by emergency chutes and taken by bus to St. Petersburg, he said. There were no injuries

Just out of interest... How does the crew service the deployed chutes?
Do they just roll them back up and re-pressurise the inflation gas canisters? or is it a longer process, taking lots of down time?

Deployed slides have to be removed and serviced and packed in a different facility. You cannot just roll them up and place them back. Normally a company will have reserve slides at homebase, so with a landing off homebase it is either a wait for them to be shipped in, or lend them with a resident company should they have them.
