Air France fire on ground

Un avion d'Air France évacué à Roissy

At Roissy. Smoke/odour apparently from the APU. Some comments on the Figaro article suggest the evacuation went less than smoothly.

Google translate's best effort:

About 300 passengers were on board a Boeing 777 Air France to Shanghai Sunday night were urgently evacuated to Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport after a smell of sulfur and a "dense smoke" invaded the cabin , said on Monday from sources.

While the plane was still at a standstill, the 298 passengers were partly borrowed two inflatable slides that were unfolded on the tarmac, stated the company and two airport sources. Two passengers were slightly injured, one elbow, and a passenger is unwell due to smoke, according to Air France.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the technical problem. The two airport sources have assumptions as "a technical failure at a turbine" or "an electrical problem in the APU auxiliary engine" that powers the plane landed and when its engine is stopped.

The passengers were accommodated by Air France and had to start Monday on another device.
Sulfur? Maybe someone let off an old fashioned stink bomb?

Not the first time a Honeywell 331-500 APU has let go. It wouldn't surprise me if there had been an (albeit intermittent) history of oil smell in the cabin prior to the 'event'.

Can't offer any comment about the APU or whatever but in the 6 second video of the evacuation on le Figaro site I spotted at least three sizeable bags and lots of coats etc. coming down the slide.

Maybe we should start a sweep on such things!

On a more serious note, is there any point in the comprehensive cabin briefings that the likes of AFR do? It's pretty clear that many people don't pay them much heed.

Evacuations happen infrequently. So nothing will change. People will still attempt to bring down everything they had on them when they boarded.

Just an idea, but maybe the flying public should be clearly informed that they should keep passports in their pockets or otherwise on their persons and their wallet as well. And that bringing their luggage down the slides will result in a 10,000 USD fine as well as imprisonment. A really tough law has to be in place for determent if determent is to work here.

Or, perhaps like cabin doors are able to be armed and dis-armed , all the overhead compartments could be made to be lockable by flight crew with a push of a button in the event of an evacuation. So that they are unable to be opened.

One would think the thought of saving ones life is enough of a reward without thinking of bringing luggage as well.

But that has not proven to be the case.

The Sheeple have got to be convinced by law or by design that luggage is to be abandoned on an emergency exit.

And instead of charging for checked luggage, airlines should charge heavily for Carry ON luggage to deter people bringing essentially mini suitcases on board.

Hand carry should be restricted to passports, wallets, a small computer or ipad, one very small bag and a jacket.

Everything else should go in the hold. Instead of what is going on today where many travelers are travelling with everything they have in the cabin.

That would cost the airlines money. IE it won't happen.
