Evacuations happen infrequently. So nothing will change. People will still attempt to bring down everything they had on them when they boarded.
Just an idea, but maybe the flying public should be clearly informed that they should keep passports in their pockets or otherwise on their persons and their wallet as well. And that bringing their luggage down the slides will result in a 10,000 USD fine as well as imprisonment. A really tough law has to be in place for determent if determent is to work here.
Or, perhaps like cabin doors are able to be armed and dis-armed , all the overhead compartments could be made to be lockable by flight crew with a push of a button in the event of an evacuation. So that they are unable to be opened.
One would think the thought of saving ones life is enough of a reward without thinking of bringing luggage as well.
But that has not proven to be the case.
The Sheeple have got to be convinced by law or by design that luggage is to be abandoned on an emergency exit.
And instead of charging for checked luggage, airlines should charge heavily for Carry ON luggage to deter people bringing essentially mini suitcases on board.
Hand carry should be restricted to passports, wallets, a small computer or ipad, one very small bag and a jacket.
Everything else should go in the hold. Instead of what is going on today where many travelers are travelling with everything they have in the cabin.
