Dear Julian,

In response to my agreement that we (pilots) should be able to carry a gun in our flight bag, you said

"And what happens if the terrorist is outside the cockpit cutting up your pax and now has hold of one of your cabin crew and is asking you to come out?
I think he will end up with a firearm."

I guess you are suggesting I would leave the cockpit to rescue the passenger or flight attendant. Unfortunately, I would STAY PUT and get the airplane on the ground.

Don't like it but post September 11, this is the philosophy. If that guy comes through the door though, I shoot him (aim to kill) and save the rest of the passengers and crew.

Thats a fair comment Flyguy, I would hope that everyone would make the same decision. My concern is that they wouldn't - its an incredibly hard one to make if your friends are in back!

[Edited for spelling!]

Julian.

Anyone tought of the rest of the pax, after what happen in september I would be surprised if they would just sit down and let the hijacker(s) try and take over. Things will never be the same, Chances are (hopefully) we won't have to intervene with the situation because the pax that wants to live will do something about it. As for us staying put in the cockpit, I agree 100%. It's an inperfect solution for an inperfect world.

Airlift - yes, it is interesting how our our point of view and procedures have changed. Prior to Sept 11 the flight crew was cautioned to watch out for "hero passengers" in a hyjacking situation and tell them to stay put.

Now, the PA system is a first level of defense. "Ladies and gentlemen, we have some nasty characters on board who want to hyjack this airplane. We need your help."

Guess we will never know all the passengers on the flight that crashed in PA that attacked the terrorists but they have my highest respect. I hope I would be as brave.

Pilots should be allowed any weapons that make sense. A hand gun being the first choice. You cannot shot down an airliner (from inside the aircraft) with a stray bullet.
