Post Management 1, Pilots 0

America West senior management have just announced that effective immediately, they will accept a 25% pay reduction to help insure the companies' survival.
The pilots' were asked to accept an 8% reduction in pay and flying hours to help keep all of them employed and to avoid future layoffs.
The pilots response was .....NO!
So, the company announced that 200 would be furloughed now with more possible later, depending on traffic.
So much for supporting "the brothers" in these difficult times.
ALPO at its best.

I wonder if the unions are aware of something called commercial pressures. My company which has a stock value of $18Bn just pulled the plug on international travel to help reduce costs so we dont have to cut jobs - this is a reality. The WTC incident is going to have a bigger aftershock than the impact

Unhappy

It really doesn't matter. Several airlines will not be around in the aftermath of the WTC disaster, and AWA is the top of the list to fold...

The employees might as well take what they can get while it lasts.

Cheers

411A,
Air NZ management awarded themselves 30% of annual salary bonuses while the company headed for Chapter 11. Air NZ made an annual loss of NZ$1.42b. Works both ways.
Wino, I agree with you.

I know many people who work for America West. Bob Fr*nke's abuse has gone on for years, underpaying their employees chronically and systematically abusing their "contract". What they (aircrew) earn is disgracefully low by any standard.

I suspect that the board has decreased their salaries in the vain hope that when the US Dept of Trade investigate them in the wake of Ch 11, they will be seen to have at least attempted something. Bzzzzz.

Whatever becomes of AWA, it can only be better than Fr*nkenBob. Fra*nke = Corporate Raider/Asset Stripper. Good riddance.

Red face

September 28, 2001

Dear Fellow Pilots:

The past few days have seen long hours and endless days for all our ALPA volunteers, staff and elected representatives. We have dealt with a number of issues ranging from security to hotels to crew meals, and most importantly, potential furloughs of pilots from the America West System Seniority List.

As you know, we have been subjected to many traumatic changes in the days since the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, and we are trying our best to represent all 1800 America West pilots to ensure that all of our contractual rights are protected, and that the long term interests of our pilots have been at the heart of our efforts.

When the Company first announced cut-backs, it was clear that a reduction of flying would take place. It was also clear that pilots were interested exploring ways to save the jobs of their fellow pilots. Your elected representatives embarked on an ambitious plan to present the Company with alternatives to furloughs. We passed a resolution that gave authority to the MEC and Negotiating Committee to explore a number of these alternatives.

On Wednesday, September 26, 2001, these talks broke down because of the Company's insistence that circumstances beyond their control could still allow them to furlough. Also at issue were reducing payments to disabled pilots, numerous restrictions on Company Convenience Leaves and elimination of the early retirement provisions.

Your MEC, Negotiating Committee, and elected representatives convened several times both formally and informally to brainstorm and offer many different ideas and options. Although we encountered numerous delays and resistance at every step from the Company, we kept our doors and our phone lines open to management. In addition, the Company never revealed its true financial position or required staffing levels to your elected leaders despite the fact that we had already signed Confidentiality Agreements with America West Holding Corporation. When making our decisions, we have had to rely only on the contradictory statements that our management has made in the media.

During follow-up calls between senior management and your MEC and elected leaders on Thursday, September 27, 2001, it was made clear to us that the Company does intend to furlough pilots, whether or not ALPA agreed to their version of the LOA. CEO Douglas Parker stated that he was "financially indifferent" to the alternative to furlough option, and that the LOA would only buy them some time.

During this telephone call, MEC Chair Roger Cox offered to put their version of the LOA out for pilot ratification, and/or discuss modifications of the language. The Company clearly indicated that they were unwilling to do either. Based on this information, your elected leaders could not approve a plan to reduce pilot salaries by up to $5 million, without ensuring that proper protections were in place for our pilots.

We are currently working overtime to ensure that affected pilots receive the information they need to plan accordingly. Assuming the Company sends out furlough notices, we will be distributing furlough packages to the pilots affected, pursuing the return of the furloughed pilots' Merger Assessment, creating a pilot job bank/referral service, and any other ways we can think of to help our pilots through these difficult times.

We also ask all pilots to ensure that they are in compliance with the scheduling and other sections of the contract and to contact one of us if they are unsure. We remain open to all options should the Company want to meet with us.

Respectfully, and in unity,

Bill Goin
Council 62 Chairman

Council 62 Vice Chairman

Once again you have got it wrong. It is doubful that America West managers took a voluntary pay cut out of the goodness of their hearts. Given the exhorbitant pay that most airline managers got, the airline bailout engineered by congress virtually required that all of them take a pay cut.

Since the company is only flying approximately 80% of it's pre-11th schedule the crews have already taken a 20% paycut. Unlike management, they are only payed for work (as in generating revenue) that actually gets done.

Question

I sometimes think that people use this site to vent their frustrations or simply to insult others. As much as I tried not to fall into the same category I have to say that I think that 411A would do us all a favour if s/he NEVER posted another topic on this site again.
