Errrrr.... Scuse me. Apparently several reports have said that JLI is the first UK airport named after a famous person -

Hope nobody dreams up renaming Vienna after our finally departed Niki Lauda =:-o
Overall I don't like the renaming of airports just because some marketing department is idle and needs to justify it's identification. It is also a very American thing to do. Just because Americans had to name all kinds of places after mostly unimportant people because they had no tradition in place names (except those copied from the natives - I recommend reading Bill Bryson for details) doesn't mean we can't keep our historic airport names, i.e. the names of the places the airports were built (over).
Does anybody really care whether he has landed in Salzburg-Maxglan or Salzburg-Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart International Airport? What if Heathrow became London-Queen Elizabeth the Second after your beloved Queen has quit her job? I think it rather silly to land in Krakow-John Paul the Second, although nobody has yet topped the Greek who have carried the idea so far as to rename the ATC callsigns too. Nikos Katzanzakis Tower, this is..........

Anyone else read Smash Hits (okay, so I know I was a bit old for it) back in the early 80s? How about Fab Macca Wacky Thumbs Aloft International? 
Well, the renaming of airports at least seems just a bit better than the renaming of stadiums and arenas in exchange for sponsorship $$$. And they don't only "replace" geographic names . . . somtimes they do away with the names of people the bulding was meant to honor, "No one's ever heard of him, so it doesn't matter, blah, blah, blah . . . "

Which everyone still calls "Galeao". And which was half empty before the second terminal was inaugurated (within easy walking distance - about five hundred metres away). Now both are three quarters empty.

I hope Manchester doesn't get the renaming bug. I mean after the Bridgewater??? Hall fiasco, you would think that Mancunians didn't know who Sir John Barbaroli was? You mean they don't know? I can understand them not wanting to name the hall after the orchestra's founder Sir Fredriech Halle him being a member of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and all. ;-))

Just think about all the fun the ATC boys could have in renaming the reporting points - e.g. a/c inbound to Strawberry Field cleared to Penny Lane via Norwegian Wood, report when ready for Help! (exclamation mark for authenticity.)

Knowing your intense dislike for all things Mancunian, it should be
pointed out that the Bridgewater Hall, as you rightly state, was not
named after any member of Manchester's Hallé orchestra, for the simply
reason that the Hallé is only a VERY minor user of a building which has
many multi-functional roles.
At the time the newly constructed hall was opened, the orchestra was
so far in debt - if I remember rightly £4Million - it was 50-50 whether
they would even continue to exist, let alone be allowed into the new
building. They couldn't pay their way when in the old Free Trade Hall
and now can't even pay their way in the new one - just been bailed out
again for another £2million. And the Liverpool Phil hasn't faired much
better over the decades and still sponges heavily off the taxpayers.
As to the subject of this thread: no one appears to have picked up the
other part of the story, namely Liverpool Airport's choice of a new
slogan. The current one reads 'Check-in to the difference'. The new
slogan, from JL's 'Imagine', will read 'Above us only Sky'.
Perhaps that was the only direction left to travel, considering what
lies 'all around us'!

Nay! not an intense dislike of all things Mancunian. I have positive intense hatred of the place and will continue to slag it off as much as I can.
But getting back to re-naming Liverpool Airport. I think that if they wanted to name it for the Beatles it should have been named Lennon/McCartney Airport. Naming an airport after famous people is not so unusual ; we have de Gaulle, Kennedy, La Guardia, John Wayne, McCarren, O'Hare, Logan, Nimitz and my own base, Lester B. Pearson, just to name a few.
I'll grant LPL one thing though; It sure brought them publicity.

Here are some new procedures to reflect the new name!
1) The NDB is being renamed LJL, to reflect the new name. the lowest holding level is still 2.5A, but you can get as high as you like!
2) The ATIS is to be changed to words from John Lennon songs, or the beatles, ie Whiskey is now Woman, India is Imagine. All ideas greatfully received!
3) Pilots will now be intructed to contact John Lennon Tower, John Lennon Radar.
And finally...
The mersey standard arrival will be renamed Ringo (as in Ringo Starr, boom boom!)
