FIUMICINO: GROUND CONTACT BETWEEN 2 PLANES, NO ONE INJURED
(AGI) - Rome, Aug. 24 - Two passenger planes made contact on a runway
at the Fiumicino airport this morning, but no one was injured. ENAV
(the national body for air traffic assistance) has ruled out that the
incident was a collision, and said in a statement that in this phase
of manoeuvre the plane engines were still off. The incident occurred
around 9.30 am, and involved 2 Alitalia planes - the MD 80 Az 156
leaving for Brussels and the MD 80 Az 1413 for Turin - which were
being transported by tractors from where they were parked on the open
space in front of the airport. The two planes made contact with their
wings in a detachment manoeuvre. From the initial reconstructions it
seems - according to the ENAV statement - that the go-ahead for the
manoeuvre by the vehicle moving the Alitalia headed for Turin, and
the one for Brussels, which was second in line for departure, was
told that another plane was in the area and that it would have to
wait for the first one to finish before staring its own manoeuvre.
However, during the manoeuvre the two planes came into contact with
their right wings. The passengers onboard were not affected, and only
felt a bit of a lurch at the moment of contact. The two planes have
been grounded temporarily to verify their condition, though it seems
that only extremely slight damage occurred. (AGI) .
