Lightbulb United's corporate fleet

I have heard a lot of talk about UAL starting a fleet of Falcon's. I even heard they ordered 40 at the Paris air show. Anyone have anything to contribute? Their website does mention that they announced their plans, but not much more info. I bet ALPA would require the pilots to be United pilot's. Here is the article I found:

May 17, 2001

CHICAGO, May 17, 2001 – UAL Corporation (NYSE:UAL), the holding company whose primary subsidiary is United Airlines, today said that its Board of Directors has authorized it to enter the business aviation market by establishing a stand-alone business devoted to fractional ownership of business jets. The company will negotiate with manufactures definitive orders and/or options for a substantial number of business aircraft, leading toward the operation of approximately 200 business aircraft by 2005.

Commenting on the new fractional ownership business, United Airlines Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James E. Goodwin, said, "The business aviation industry has seen dramatic growth over the last 10 years, reflecting the needs of the market and particularly, the needs of our corporate customers. We believe that given our operational excellence and our 75 years of aviation experience, we are positioned to supply a unique product, blending that experience and excellence with a quality product and the very highest standards of customer service consistent with those found in the world’s finest hotels.

While the new fractional ownership business will be funded by and linked to United’s operating capabilities, it will otherwise be fully separate from United.

UAL Corporation intends to make further announcements about the new subsidiary shortly.

United Places $1.25 Billion Gulfstream Order, Plans "5-Star" Service

By Stephen Trimble/LE BOURGET, France

17-Jun-2001 9:20 AM U.S. EDT

United Airlines unveiled Sunday a major component of its future fleet of fractional ownership business jets in a $1.25 billion deal with Gulfstream aircraft-maker General Dynamics.

The move, disclosed during a Paris Air Show press conference here, rounds out the airline's plans to enter the booming fractional ownership market by buying a mix of 35 Gulfstream jets, including Gulfstream 4s, Gulfstream 5s and Gulfstream 5SPs.

"Today marks an important milestone for us," said Stuart Oran, president of United BizJet Holdings, who spoke over the engine roar of a Mirage fighter performing acrobatics for the air show audience.

United announced the deal with Gulfstream one day after signing a letter of intent to buy a variety of 100 Dassault-made Falcon business jets for $2.5 billion.

Those deals involve a wide mix of long-range jets that are aimed for the high-end executive travel market. Leaning on 75 years of experience in the customer service field, United plans to operate the jets as the airborne equivalent of five-star hotels and five-star restaurants, Oran said

Compared to rivals in the fractional jet market, United should have a clear advantage in customer service.

"I think the one thing they can bring to it, as an airline, their business is customer service," said Raymond Jaworowski, a senior aerospace analyst for Forecast International, of Newton, Conn. "They can maybe bring that aspect of it to corporate jets."

Overall, the number of corporate jets is expected to skyrocket by 2010, Jaworowski said, citing a Forecast International survey scheduled to be released June 19. More than 7,300 new business jets will be delivered from 2001 and 2010, compared with roughly 4,000 planes from 1991-2000, the study shows.

United also hopes to lure some of the lucrative business travelers who have recently defected from airlines to the fractional jet market, Jaworowski said.

Before my last 11 years at one of the "big 3" U.S. carriers I flew corporate/charter in Lear/Hawker/Gulstream bizjets. In my opinion, UAL's move is one of the most ridiculous corporate moves I have ever heard of. I would be less shocked if McDonalds' announced a 1 billion dollar chain of exclusive restaurants catering to millionaires.

AA ventured into this field and left just a few years ago. That was even after years of owning Combs/Gates FBO's with their infrastructer and personell experience behind them. UAL is going to start from scratch.
