01 DEC 2005 Skymark Boeing 767 suffers uncontained engine failure
A Skymark Airlines Boeing 767-300 suffered an uncontained nr. 2 engine failure after takeoff from Kagoshima (KOJ), while climbing through an altitude of about 1,650 meters. Flight 306 was bound for Tokyo-Haneda Airport (HND) with 90 passengers and crew on board. The airplane returned to Kagoshima where it landed safely. After landing a 1.5-meter-long, 20- to 60-centimeter hole was discovered in the engine. (Mainichi, Asahi.com)
A birdstrike? ^^ Or what would lead to a hole like this?

more news--officials are now "investigating"

"Japanese jet's engine bursts into flames

KAGOSHIMA, Japan, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- A Japanese passenger jet made an emergency landing in southern Japan after a fire burned a large hole in its right engine.

Skymark Airlines Flight 306, with 90 people aboard, had just left Kagoshima on a flight to Tokyo late Thursday afternoon, when a cockpit warning light indicated a fire in the Boeing 767's engine. The pilot shut down the engine and returned to Kagoshima, making an emergency landing about 15 minutes later.

No injuries were reported, the Mainichi Shimbun reported Friday.

Transport ministry officials called it as a serious incident that could have led to a fatal accident, and dispatched inspectors to the scene.

Ministry officials and mechanics found a jagged hole in the right engine that was 60 inches long and between 8 and 24 inches wide. Many of the engine's blades were missing."

Now that is what I call a hole!

The hole is in the core cowl, over the combustor/turrbine area. The fan is out of the picture here. The engine damage can't be seen in this shot.

No doubt the pilots have been taken away by the police!
