Greek jets scrambled after plane from Italy strays off course

ATHENS, Greece_Greek fighter jets were scrambled Thursday after an unidentified plane that had taken off from Italy strayed off course, state-run television NET said.

The two air force jets were ordered to intercept the airplane, which had been heading to the Mediterranean island of Crete.

Other details were not immediately available.

Fairly common in Europe now. Generally the consequence of no r/t contact for one reason or another.

Indeed this was the case (once more).

There are posts which portray the RV8 pilot "evaded Hellenic Air Force" (HAF) ... yeah right !

Incidentally I was talking yesterday with one of the two air force pilots who were scrambled to the incident. His words: "... yes we followed the [bad word] all the way to the border with Nicosia FIR (Cyprus) doing orbits 2nm miles behind him since he was so damn slow ... "

Funny how they report HAF never found him. There was no intercept, simply a precautionary discrete following of the aircraft until it left Athens FIR. Once again media made a whole fuss about it.


This was the Hellenic press agency's report (in Greek) on March 24th regarding the incident.
