The 1st major storm of the season is just starting to get rolling. Amounts from Newark to Boston are expected between 12 and 30 inches. Should be pushing out by noon tomorrow. Don't think too many people or planes will be coming here the next couple of days if they haven't already left already.

Sitting in the Manhattan Sheraton right now looking at the snow falling wondering whether we'll be departing tonight. 2300hrs scheduled departure time, it's now 1230hrs local, so plenty of time for the snow to pile up looking at the accumulation already!
Oh well, another night in the Big Apple....

Looks like this is going to be quite a storm!!
I've just had a quick look at the BAA Arrivals/Departures website and Virgin, BA, United and American all have ''Please Contact your airline'' next to all departures to Newark, Boston and JFK.
Does this mean that LHR currently has AA/UA aicraft that have no where to go?? The flights all arrived from the NE USA during the morning but it seems as though they can't get back!
Be interesting to hear from anyone who works at LHR as to what is happening to these A/C. Between the 4 airlines mentioned 8 flights seem to be going no-where!
I take it its just a case of park them on a remote stand and wait for the weather to clear??
Regards.
Matt.

Planes now diverting as far away as Chicago and Atlanta... some 800 miles away. Just heard the 747 that went off the runway will be there for hours. Weather only expected to intensify.

True, but proportionately neither side of the Atlantic is ever ready for the first heavy snow. I can remember when Kennedy was down to just one de-icing truck on one occasion.
04R: Isn't that the short one one that finishes up in the canal? I can remember the SAS DC10 that was parked there for so long it became known as the longboat.

Major airports close.
Its quite interesting how they close all the airports as soon as some snow is falling. Here in the land of snow that is not an option just a challenge for the snowteams which they ALWAYS take care of.
Of course there will be delays as usual but the airports stay open. Well have to go now duty starts in 2 hours and last night we got 10+ inches of snow so only thing that will be longer is the drive to the airport

The weather was also very on time. The news said that the wx was expected to hit PHL around 10. When we pushed back out of PHL around 10 we noticed the first snow flakes and 10 minutes later the viz dropped considerebly. I was glad to get out.

All over for the most part
It's 11:00am Eastern Time and the snow has stopped and the sun is out and Mrs. NS and myself just finished shovelling 14 inches of the white stuff. Still the occasional gust to 40 mph but for the most part, that's it. LGA, JFK and EWR all fully operational with one minor snag....there are no planes to fly the passengers out as they all diverted last night.
Things should only improve as the day goes on, but from what I hear, Boston is still in the middle of the storm and will be until late afternoon.

NS,
just because the airport is open doesn't mean there are any gates avialable yet.
They push the snow from one gate to the next, get about half of them open that way, then they bring in those huge snow melt machines and frontloaders and start melting the piles, and slowly get the rest of the gates open. Could take a couple of days for full capacity... I got a trip out of Newark tonight so when I get back tomorrow, I will pass my observations...
Cheers

Lou S: at least you can find lots of good cuisine and beer, if the pubs etc are open, and maybe have a nice hike or run thru Central park. Glad now that my company dumped some unrequested vacation days in Jan. Much of the flying public somehow assumes that even with weather, the delicate hub and spoke system flights will operate on schedule. Even middle-aged adults. Never ceases to amaze me. Many of these should be invited to the Jerry Springer show (stage).
At Newark a 747 slid off? Let's hope that the crew asked for the latest braking action report (and made by a transport jet-never trust turboprop reports, unless bad) before they landed-was there some clear ice or just snow on runway 4R? Any chemical treatment? Can't imagine they they were the first landing in quite a while.
Wino: that A-300 has a really nice c0ckp1t layout and appearance. Saw it on FEDEX once, and am envious, depending on when duty hours begin.

I am afraid the us doesnt understand about braking action ,they use landing aircraft to determine that. Also remember departing
den a few years ago, asking for the snow depth for the takeoff calculation and atc didnt have a clue and had no intention of finding out! thats what l call cowboy country
