Emergency services on standby as Fokker lands at Findel

The Protection Civile yesterday afternoon launched its multiple victims plan into action after being alerted by the control tower at Findel of a problem with a Luxair Fokker as it approached to land at the airport. The Fokker, flight LG9725 to Saarbrücken and Munich, had taken off from Findel at 4 p.m. As the plane made it approach to Saarbrücken, the pilots noticed a warning light in the cockpit that indicated a problem with the landing gear of the plane. They decided to turn the plane around and land back at Findel, where Luxair technical crews could better repair the problem.

At just after 5 p.m., the pilot notified the control tower at Findel of the problem and the Protection Civile was also notified. Emergency services stationed at Findel sprang into action alongside colleagues from Luxembourg City, SAMU and the Police Grand Ducale. The blood transfusion service of the Red Cross and emergency medical teams at hospitals in Esch-sur-Alzette, Ettelbrück, the Centre Hospitalier and the Clinique d’Eich were also put on standby.

The plane ended up circling the airport while emergency crews were made ready, then flew low over the tower to obtain physical confirmation that its landing gear had actually been properly activated. Meanwhile, Luxair CEO Christian Heinzmann was joined at the airport by civil aviation director Henri Klein and general secretary of the ministry of transport Paul Schmit. Transport minister Henri Grethen and interior minister Michel Wolter had immediately been informed of the incident.

The Fokker finally landed safely at 7 p.m. and the 14 passengers and four crew disembarked without injury from the plane. They were offered counselling by the psychological support unit of the Protection Civile.
