Maybe two reasons. The offences of the departing or the perverse mentality of the management.

He’s an S92 pilot, formerly Dutch military CH47 pilot who did an exchange tour with the RAF, and was deployed.

He's a good mate and a great bloke. As 212man states, an experienced pilot both military/civil, and I believe he was union rep at one point.

Sounds like a sound and suitable candidate.
Unlikely to last long.

Ordinarily I'd agree wholeheartedly with this view ('unlikely to last long') but I would also note that everyone with power over him/ his position has been sacked which puts a good amount of power in his hands. Let's hope he lasts.

Old CEO (Dave Balevic) out
New CEO in (Jorn Madsen, ex CEO of Maersk drilling)

Jørn Madsen replaces David Balevic as CEO of CHC Helicopter | CHC

Quick google of this guy tells me this will be interesting.

minigundiplomat 8th Feb 2023 15:15

I like Dave, but he didn't really have a background in rotary or oil & gas; neither did Karl, but he had a spark and couldn't really fail to shine after Billy the Vandal.

malabo 8th Feb 2023 19:17

Thought Balevic was a dead duck when I saw the refinance effort from August last year. Nice guy, but not the pirate that is needed these days. The last "pilot" to successfully hold the reins was Sylvain Allard, those days are long over.

For those that can’t read the full article..

The chief executive of listed Danish drilling rig group Maersk Drilling, Jørn Madsen, has been issued a warning by the company board following verbal abuse of a female colleague.

After a situation in the spring of 2021, where Madsen yelled at a female subordinate, several reports were submitted to Maersk Drilling's whistleblower system, according to Finans' information.

Those reporting the episode described how the female employee had been subjected to gross verbal abuse, and that she was subsequently dismissed. The reports prompted an external legal investigation conducted by law firm Norrbom Vinding.

As a consequence of the investigation, the board of directors gave Madsen a warning, as confirmed by Chair Claus V. Hemmingsen in communication with Finans.

Hemmingsen says that the board was notified earlier this year of a situation in which Madsen came into a discussion with an employee at the main office, and that the situation "escalated to a point at which Madsen expressed his frustration loudly".

According to Hemmingsen, the legal investigation concluded that there was no cause for employment-related sanctions regarding Madsen.

"I agree with this conclusion, which provided the backdrop for Jørn [Madsen] receiving a warning," Hemmingsen writes in a comment.

Hemmingsen also points out that Madsen "immediately acknowledged that his conduct in the situation had been inappropriate for a person in his position".

The female employee was fired a few days after the episode. Finans is aware of her identity, but she has declined to comment on the matter.

At the start of 2021, I flew off the handle and addressed an employee far too harshly. It was by no means alright, and shortly afterward I gave my unreserved apology to the employee in question.
Jørn Madsen, CEO, Maersk DrillingHemmingsen won't answer as to why the employee was dismissed, but he denies that it has anything to do with the episode.

"On principle and of consideration to the concerned parties, we do not discuss the details of individual persons' employment conditions, but I will in this case underscore that the dismissal of the employee in question was not prompted by the incident," he writes in a comment.

Madsen's conduct stands in immediate contrast to Maersk Drilling's outward signals. The group holds "humbleness" among its core values and on its website pledges to "listen, learn, share, and give space to others." Another core value is to create "the right environment for the right people."

Madsen regrets the situation.

"At the start of 2021, I flew off the handle and addressed an employee far too harshly. It was by no means alright, and shortly afterward I gave my unreserved apology to the employee in question. I would like to repeat that: I am deeply sorry about my conduct in the situation. I was rightly issued a warning, which I take and have taken very seriously," he writes in a comment.

Fiery temper

Besides Hemmingsen, himself a former CEO of Maersk Drilling, the rig operator's board also includes Robert Mærsk Uggla, CEO of the Mærsk family's investment firm, A.P. Moller Holding. A.P. Moller Holding owns 41.6 percent of Maersk Drilling, while the A.P. Moller Foundation owns 8.9 percent.

A.P. Moller Holding declines to comment on the matter.

"I refer to Maersk Drilling's chairman of the board, Claus Hemmingsen, who speaks on behalf of the board," writes Head of Branding and Communications Mika Bildsøe Lassen to Finans in an email.

According to a number of sources, Madsen at times expresses a fiery temper, which is well-known in the organization. Several people Finans has spoken to have themselves been verbally abused by the CEO or witnessed others who have.

But Chair Hemmingsen underscores that neither satisfaction measurements, reports to the ethical hotline, regular feedback conversations nor work environment investigations have given reasons to conclude that Maersk Drilling has a general problem.

In November, it was announced that Maersk Drilling will be taken over by US drilling group Noble. The merger is slated to take place in mid-2022, and Madsen is expected to remain with the company until it is complete.

CEO shouts at bad PA and apologizes a few hours later. Gets public reprimand from his board. Why is that what we are talking about?
He seems to me an oil and gas guy through and through. He used to manage rigs, argue with oil companies, has been a user of the product he's about to sell, then ran a NASDAQ listed business with 3000 employees, has a personality and speaks excellent english. I'm not sure I see the problem here.

Not saying there is a problem, merely pointing out he has history of a hot head and a bad temper. Talk of verbal abuse to staff and bullying of a female colleague doesn’t bode well for some (especially any female contingent)

How do you know it was a bad PA from that article? Regardless, every member of staff should be treated with respect, it looks like a law firm were involved there.

Certainly relevant to a thread with the title “What’s happening in CHC” wouldn’t you say? Public information in the public domain, was third or 4th article in a Google search of his name.

What makes you champion someone from the O&G sector over someone from say an aviation background? It’s effectively those high up in the O&G sector that have brought O&G aviation to its knees over the last decade or so? Agree, Disagree?

I suppose, let’s see what happens, it may turn out to be a great appointment, it may not. We will revisit this in a few years.

Agree

Although it was someone from a laptop company that actually bought CHC to its knees.

nowherespecial 10th Feb 2023 04:59

Normally I'd agree, in fact further up this thread I was arguing exactly this point (albeit 7 years ago).

My point now is that we have an aviation business servicing the oil and gas industry. If the person isn't going to be a pilot/ engineer (ie aviation) , I'd rather have the person who know the customer industry (oil and gas), the cyclical nature of it and the customers very well over the laptop salesman (thanks MGD!). Out of interest, who would you have picked? Is there an actual name?

I am happy with my perspective on the new CEO from people who know him from the industry. 1 rebuke in 30 years does not mean he is a workplace bully. We've all been told off at work, some more than others. often there are 2 sides to every interaction. If we used some of the combative language and sentiment we use widely on this forum in a workplace environment, I am sure we'd all be subject to HR interviews. People have emotions, I don't mind that. I want competency first and foremost. Let's give him a chance. I may well be proved to be wrong and I will admit so if I am.
