ROTORHEADS AROUND THE WORLD: Videos
Guys,
Just had a thought. we have the photo's thread and the Cockpits view thread, how about collecting the cool vids that we see quite often in one thread? :ok: MD :D |
I agree. :ok:
We have scores of videos in various threads, and it would be good to have them (or a copy) in one place. I thought about merging the video files into one but that wouldn't work because many of the videos generated good discussions which would mean little or nothing in a merged thread. I've discussed a similar idea with one of our regulars who has a website and is willing to help but, at the moment, he's too busy. One of the problems we encounter with the picture collections is that we lose pictures if the person who posted breaks the link by moving picture files on their website, closes their website or stops using the photohosting service that they used to post the picture(s). It's been a long process but I now have backups of the majority of our thousands of pictures, and have set up a photo-hosting account to rehost them if the link is broken. (1) Do we have any volunteers prepared to help build up a collection from videos already posted on the forum? ie Look through old threads for video links, copy the links and post them into a 'Videos from Around the World' thread. MD900 Explorer - Would you like to start the ball rolling by being one of the first to volunteer? (2) Do we have any volunteers with their own websites who would be prepared to help by hosting some videos? ie Save copies of videos and host them if necessary on their own websites? (The links would have to be direct to the videos, not to a page of the website with a second link to the video.) Some of the links no longer work and I'd like to avoid losing any more. For a linked purpose - (3) Do we have any IT experts who can save Flash Player videos as a file? I don't mean tell me which programmes will do it (there are several downloadable from the net), I mean willing to help by creating files. NB: Please don't post links to websites with helicopter videos on this thread. The idea is to create our own collection of videos - just as we have with our picture collections. Heliport |
Heliport
Just got home, trying to be less busy this weekend, I am happy to host the videos as we have previously discussed , and create an initial set of links to my collection. If anyone wants to post a link or PM me with one, i'll do my best to download the file and get it hosted on my server. The only drawback with the direct links approach is that all the code that could be written to provide file type conversions and thumbnails isn't usable so it will only ever be a limited version of what it could be. I'll then come back and edit the list as appropriate when i've hosted any new videos. Cheers V. |
Thanks VeeAny. :ok:
A thumbnail link to the video isn't essential. I agree a still from the video makes the list look more attractive, but that can be included in the post as a gif or jpg. All we really need is a title and a link (or a title in the link). eg Shocking experience (Non-aviation, just an example) eg Low level in Africa: Link This is a large file. If you're using a dial-up connection, it's best to save the video to your hard disk before playing. (In Windows, right-click on the link and select Save target as ........' from the drop-down menu. If using Mac .............. etc) . |
Great idea
I've seen a lot of great videos online, but some of the more interesting ones just seem to get lost especially when you're looking for them to illustrate a point.
One thing though - as inveterate rubber neckers most of us seem to be fascinated by crash videos, but could people also contribute "day in the life", aerodynamic phenomena, beautiful location, or just plain different aspects of the industry too? I'm fascinated by the machines and somehow being immersed in the business most of my waking life doesn't make it old (yet - everyone tells me it will...), so would love to see more of various rotorheads experiences. Keep the old enthusiasm fires stoked! Thanks |
Here we go....

Video Hosting
Heliport, VeeAny et al,
Since hosting videos can be quite disk space & bandwidth intensive, I'd recommend to anyone to upload their videos to youtube. It converts whatever format you upload into a format most browsers can play (Macs & PC work fine), gives an easy to use link, and best of all is free. The only possible downside I can think of is that it is very public. i.e. on some obscure server somewhere, you link my never go outside PPRuNe, but youtube has a very good search facility. Anyway, just a thought. |
Low level with Puma:
Even lower level (BO-105): Good idea to get a topic for videos too:ok: |

Other downsides to YouTube - You can't (as far as I know) link direct to the video. You have to link to the YouTube page and then to the video. You can't save the video file to hard disk without additional software and the knowledge to use it. So, if the video is removed for any reason, it's lost. |

I don't think many people are aware of Google Video yet because it's still officially in beta form and doesn't therefore appear on the main Google page, but go to:- http://video.google.com/ (It's basically Google Images but for videos).
Try putting "helicopter" into the search box and you will currently get 1,481 direct links to videos with thumbnails......although some are repetitions and many are about R/C models. Here's a trial link, although it does go via Google - http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...4&q=helicopter But caution - don't go to the "comedy" section unless you've got a spare three weeks on your hands! Brantly being used as a back yard leaf blower. About 40 seconds.
You can right-click on the link and "Save Target As" to save it to your local drive and play it from there, if the viewing speed is too slow. Smaller file for slower internet connections (about 3MB) Larger file (and picture) for faster internet connections (about 13.5MB) Both of these files are the same clip. Just one has a larger picture than the other. |

Here'a 205 creating ice fog at -40C when he pulls pitch.
From a Mr. Helidriver2 from verticalmag Super 205, Super Vortex!!! I was Lifting 8 drums of diesel at -40C. Needless to say the ground crew weren't happy as the windchill was around -62C. (We had 300 drums to move 15 miles) I lost sight of the drums soon after they were airborne but could still see out the top 3rd of the windshield. I just pointed it towards the sun to see |
A bad case of Dynamic rollover would have given this guy a super new hair cut!!
The mentality of some people never ceases to amaze me!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkYlITEtKxI I know in commercial flying that time is money but is it really worth the risk? |

Real strange this life wire repairs! Altough i know such procedures are not so seldom, i couldn't acclimate myself on such views.
Trying not to think on possible problems. :\ One positive factor on such jobs: Needless to meet concerns about mobile phone radiation! :} But maybe after the mission the smart card or the memory of my phone is deleted? Must be the hell of a electric flow field. Carcinogenic??? The sparks during connecting are absolute horrible. Must be interesting to measure the generator peak. Hats down to the crew! Some guys have really to work hard for their money!!!:D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3q9WdjD5wc |
Well this should keep you ticking.
It's funny that the guy says that he is only afraid of three things in life.... check out the video to find out. Cool stuff :ok: |
