Life cover for pilots

I am in the throws of buying a house and a condition of my mortgage is that I need life cover insurance. I have today found out that because I am a professional pilot and deemed to be involved in a high risk job the premiums are double that of someone like a lorry driver who doesnt have a high risk job.

What rubbish...does anyone know a pilot friendly company out there?. The good news is that the double premium only lasts for the the next 20 years and then drops to the "normal rate". Just about the time when I shall be thinking about retirement idiots..........

If you are a military pilot then your premium might well be loaded but if you are a "normal" civilian pilot operating under a public transport AOC then there should be no reason why you have to pay anything extra. Shop around and don't accept any loading.

As a rotary pilot, my life insurance is through Norwich Union and is not loaded due to my occupation. There are many differet facets to the NU group though, so it may take a bit of research to find the correct one. Happy to provide more info if required.

Life Insurance, are you kidding, the wife already has plenty of reason to treat me to an OJ. You want to add a financial incentive................

When they found out I'm a HELICOPTER pilot, most insurance companies would not even sell me life insurance. After quite a bit of searching, the only company I found (this was continental Europe) was Winterthur, a Swiss company. Their rates are quite reasonable, no loading of premiums because of my job.

Why do you need any insurance cover for a mortgage??
Surely your house is the collateral??

idle stop 18th Aug 2004 09:40

Try BESSO Insurance services. They are aviation specialists and do realistic Life and Personal Accident insurance.

I'm pretty sure that when I was in the military, HM kindly refunded the aviation excesses on Life policies. But this was now a long time ago.......

Life Insurance

Try "SOVEREIGN" - they advertise in FLYER Mag. I got life cover with no loading of premium. Excellent service. Freephone 0800 9177206 or www.sovair.co.uk

TC,

I imagine it is because the bank/building society does not want to have to throw the widow/er kids on the street if the pilot dies....

Bad publicity and just think of all those lawyer's fees

Staticdroop 18th Aug 2004 13:20

Had the same problem when i moved house recently and was shocked at the loading, i told the woolwich to F of and stareted looking elsewhere, i got mine eventualy with Norwich Union for a very good price:D

Bravo 99 (AJB) 19th Aug 2004 14:35

Just adding to my earliar post my policy is also with the norwich so it would seem that these guys are sympothetic to Heli pilots.

Sincerely

the interesting thing is it was the Norwich Union that doubled the premium for me so i shall phone them and investigate...

Thanks for the Info

I took the cover through Sovereign (underwritten by Legal and General). A simple death benefit policy was £11 for £120,000 cover.

Don't bother asking BALPA financial services, ,I filled in a load of forms for them, then after six weeks called them to see if they had done anything with them! Still haven't heard anything but my bank is offering me life cover only at £15 a month for £100,000 of cover.

The Governor 23rd Aug 2004 12:54

My financial advisor found me some with Lutine (part of lloyds) and they forgot to ask what I did so only £7/month for £100,00o cover. They aren't happy but a policy is in place and it's too late.

Try an independent financial advisor and explain the problem as they can search all available policies for you and save some time. I know you can get exemptions that you are cover ed so long as you aren't flying when you croak. That might workf if the company you work for pays out in that case.

Loss of Licence Insurance

Hello All

Does anyone know of any loss of licence insurance that one can take out in an individual capacity? If so-what kind of cover and so on? Many thanks.

IFALPA has a good one.
You`d have to be a member of an acknowledged association, though.

Several very reputable firms advertise in Flight International, Pilot and other aviation magazines.

Its a relatively simple process, but the premiums - considering what you actually get if you had to make a claim, as you may have guessed, are very expensive.

I enquired about 18 months ago for loss of licence insurance ( as an ATCO), and the best quote I could get was £350 per annum for a one off £30K lump sum payment.

Loss of income (licence) insurance

Hi all

I am just wondering what companies you use for your loss of licence insurance, and what the premiums are like. I have just recieved my bill for the next year from Noall Insurance in Sydney. It is the equivilant to 1/2 a months salary. (housing included) The amount covered is 75% of Salary + Housing.

I am not an AOA member but if maybe a member can give us an idea on how their scheme compares, it may be a useful recruitment tool for the association.

Please no slandering or AOA vs NON AOA etc... just some constructive discussion please, i feel we are all in the same boat re excessive premiums.

Thanks
Flying Kiwi
