From the relative Newbie side of the house...

1) What types of flying work do you do?
I don't have a flying job. I work in Information Technology making decent coin. Still, I would rather a have flying job.

2) What types do you fly?
R22 Beta, R22 Beta II, R22 Mariner, R44 Raven I, Bell B47G2, Brantly B2B, Enstrom F28C, and the Enstrom 280FX. I'm trying to get as much experience with different types of aircraft as I possibly can. I haven't flown the Schweitzer or Hiller, yet - but they are next on my list.

3) Where?
Baltimore / Washington Metropolitan Area (USA)

4) Previous jobs?
At my last job, I was the Information Systems Security Manager for the DoD Global Emerging Infections Surveillance and Response System. Today, I'm the Chief Technology Officer for a local training and network integration firm.

5) Previous types?
None (trained on R22)

6) Military/ Ex-Military?
I spent 13 years in the U.S. Army, and I participated in two different tours of combat before I was legally able to drink alcohol! While I was in the 82nd Airborne (Infantry), I jumped into Panama in '89 and went Gulf War I in '90-91. After that, I moved to a different field of work (to finish school) and eventually got a cool IT job for the Under Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. I couldn't financially afford to stay in military service after that.

7) How long have you been flying?
About 3+ years

8) How many hours?
Much much less flying time than the rest of you Pro's

9) Most memorable flight?
As a passenger... conducting a parachute jump from the back of a CH-47!

Comments:
I enjoy the conversations and humor at PPRuNe, except for the occassional threads that seem to attack another person's character. Also the threads that are too ridiculous or way off topic are bothersome.

yeah......I like the idea although there are fun moments when I am "wording" with a pseudonym and am trying to guess who or what he/she is.

Maybe a couple of extra rows at the bottom of each thread ???

Love this forum. Marvellous means of communication both for fun and education.

Agreed. I have to say the whole "Ah-dee Rik-stah" story was hilarious. See "Battle of the Titans"...

I agree. The "Ah-dee Rik-stah" story was one of the funniest posts I've seen on the forum, but ...............

Let's get back to the subject of the thread before we wander off too far.

Is it wrong to drool over everyone elses history and experience?

Flying the R22 like half the world it seems

Working in PHX area as CFI and have about a month of experience. Have the distinct pleasure of shaking Mr. Rich Lee's hand (I think he was scared I recognized him 3 months ago at Quantum Helicopters.

Have about 300 TT now and hoping that I will be lucky enough to fill a paragraph or two at the end of my career of different types flown.

The obstacle is the path (Tao de ching)

Just started instructing part time.

What types(s) do you fly?
R22 (just to be original!).

Where? (As precise as you can be without losing anonymity.)
North West UK. (What anonymity? So many people know who I am that I might just as well start to introduce myself as Whirly! )

Previous jobs?
Still work as freelance researcher/writer, and expect to carry on doing so. Have been a Market Research Interviewer, Occupational Psychologist, Meditation Teacher, worked in promotions and sales, and several other things I can't remember, and which are totally irrelevant. When people ask if flying is a second career for me, I tend not to say it's probably about a sixth.

Military / ex-Military? (Which? What types?)
No

Started f/w flying in 1997, and helicopters in 1999.

What type of flying work do you do?

The fun stuff, I'm taking my CFI Checkride ... Tomorrow! OY!
Then I'll REALLY begin to learn the art of flying helis, as my students teach me a thing or three.

What types(s) do you fly?

PIC in R-22, R-44, have some 206 time, and have flown an HH-1N when given the chance whilst in the military.

Where? (As precise as you can be without losing anonymity.)

Fort Lauderdale, I'm also not worried about my anonymity, the same as Whirly

Previous jobs?

None in the civilian sector flying wise. Open to offers. I do computers and web hosting support at the moment, that will change as I move to instructing, with the noticable drop in pay. but there's a bright side, I'll lose weight ! (As I won't be able to afford real food anymore hehehe ...)

Previous types?

Nope.

Military / ex-Military? (Which? What types?)

Naval Aircrew, HH-1N, EC-130Q

How long have you been flying?

Since 1983.

How many hours?

430 TT, split evenly at this point between fixed wing and rotorcraft, and the rotorcraft time is only going to get better!

I also got engaged, wedding planned for the 4th of January, and AIDS will not be an issue (Aviation Induced Divorce syndrome) as she likes to fly (doors off yet too), and knows what to expect down the line as I try to make it into the big leagues. (Plus she has her own career too ..)

What type of flying work do you do?
Aeromedical helicopter pilot, VFR. Don't be fooled by some of the 1000 hour minimum requirements you see. This is a job for salty old types- you don't fly much, so you don't build skills. That will bite you bad when you're called out at oh-dark thirty, for a scene call, into marginal weather, in a dark part of the world. SPIFR would really be nice.
Heck, some hospital helipad/LZ's are as scary as taking fire...

What types(s) do you fly?
AS 350 (my favorite so far)

Where? (As precise as you can be without losing anonymity.)
Southeastern U.S., mainly Georgia, but also South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee.

Previous jobs?
Stay at home Dad, 4 years
PHI, 13 years
"CFI", 1 year. Great work, but it gets old as the only course of the meal.
"Normal person" and home every night, 10 years.
U.S. Army, 3 years

Previous types?
IN reverse chronological order- Bell 412; Aerospat 355; Bell 206's in all flavors; Hughes 300 (much better machine than the TH-55); TH 55 as IP; UH-1 doin' Firefly in the Mekong Delta; and of course the TH 55 as WOC.
Bits and pieces- AH-1G, as "Bullet catcher"; TH-13 and Bell 47; HUghes 500; AS 330; Bell 222; Bell 214.

Military / ex-Military? (Which? What types?)
Very, very ex-military. "I tried working with the system, and it just didn't respond."

How long have you been flying?
Off and on, mostly on, since Oct '68.

How many hours?
It's a theoretical distinction after 3000 or so hours, but somewhere over 8,000.

I still love it.
I see new pilots in the early stages of the romance, and they're well trained and motivated- but there are so few of them! I see helo ems having huge growth in the next few years- where will all the pilots come from?

As my 'name' indicates, I am a 'usedtabe' Royal Marines Helicopter Pilot.

I trained in 1965 on Chipmunk, Hiller 12b, B47 Sioux and then converted to the Westland Scout.

Flew a tour in Aden on the Sioux, and then in the UK/Norway/Africa/Europe/Canada followed by a Qualified Helicopter Instructor (QHI) course. Instructed on Sioux and Scout.

Became the RM member on the Gazelle Intensive Flying Trials Unit, and subsequently converted pilots onto the Gazelle.

Retired from the RM in 1977 and flew AB205s in the Sultan of Oman's Air Force for 3 years.

Joined the Royal Air Force flying Gazelle, but lost my medical cat. in 1981, and re-branched into Supply. Ended with 4,000hrs.

Now I watch from my garden the Police Heli working over Dorset, the training/working helis flying out of Bournemouth Airport, Chinooks out of RAF Odiham, the Coastguard, the Navy from Yeovilton, and Gazelle/Lynx out of Middle Wallop, and wish them all safe trips! (but why is my house a navigation turning point?)

About 10,000 accident/incident free hours....(Knocking on Wood!)

US/UK/Nigerian ATPL
US CFI/CFII Helicopters and Airplanes Single and Multi-engine

Ex-US Army Warrant Officer (Charter Member Phu Loi Chapter of WOPA) Started in Helicopters in June of '67 Two tours as a CH-47 Instructor

Seen Upper Volta, Ghana, Mali, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Italy, UK, France, Canada, Alaska, USA, Jordan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Spain, The Canary Islands, Norway, and a few other places by helicopter.

Now fly an armed BK-117 on a counter-terrorist operation within the US......dark gray....not black helicopter.

Most flying in one day.....18+55 Vietnam
Longest flight....Deadhorse (Prudhoe Bay) to Lafayette, Louisana

Most memorable things....

French coastline on a full moon night ....snow covered ground after crossing the channel in an S-58T.

The sheer joy of a vertical climb at max torque in an empty C Model Chinook doing left pedal turns....seeing the VSI pegged!

Realizing the Hughes 500D and all occupants were unscathed after an engine failure coming off Mt. Neuhauser near Tok, Alaska just at dark. (Proved bears do not like smelly things with soggy trousers!) 9800 feet to the forest.....and yes you can climb in full autorotation from 60 knots in a H-500 (OH-6A)! You just really have to want to do it!

Bagpipes in the middle of the Iranian desert.....and a cat's chorus of singers on the beer!

Ivana Leali....!!!

Being shot at and being missed.

Ivana Leali.....!!!

What scares me the most....The thought of seeing Nick Lappos in a Tu-Tu. (envisioning himself as Nicole Kidman!)
