Terrain doesn’t look particularly noteworthy in the area. Anyone more familiar with the geography able to chime in?

You can get a good feel in Google Earth in 3D. Nothing extreme, just lots of small hillocks.

I see NTSB have issued a preliminary report which says this:

Conditions at Accident Site: IMC
Condition of Light: Night
