PBN training for helicopters

Hello to all

I come here looking for some light ;-)

First.....is the PBN training (theoretical) the same for FW and RW? Meaning you could do it in a FW ATO and then use the certificate for the check ride?

As ive seen ...pilots that want to fly IR will require to have the PBN training done and in the licence.

I´ve seen so many diferent prices for the PBN course....theoretical part only......prices from 1000 euros to 100 euros. Courses that you need to sit in a class room and courses you can do online.
Its very strange how some ATO will change half a kidney and others...like BGS will charge so less and you can do it online.....

Basically you can do the theoretical training in one ATO and then finish it on another with a IR check that includes PBN

I´ve always been to the impression that if it is too good (or cheap) then something must be wrong.....

What is your opinion??

Try contacting Starspeed at Kemble. They do a remote learning course and use the sim they have for the check ride element. I used them last year when they first started the course.
I think that all courses must be CAA approved so the course content must meet certain standards.

Hello
The SIM at Starspeed can be used for the check ride? Just to double check....Is it mandatory to do the SIM training or after the PBN theoretical you can go and do the check ride?

CAA Information Notice 2017/034 covers the requirements for pilots.

If you can’t demonstrate familiarity with PBN, you must undertake theoretical and practical training and then pass an examination before passing a skill test or proficiency check which includes PBN IR elements.

The LST or PC needs to be on an approved FTD applicable to the type on your licence so I don’t think it can be carried out on the Starspeed FTD.

I'm not sure based on what information you assume that Starspeed's FNPT II isn't approved for the PBN check flight but I know for certain of students undertaking the course and check flight in their sim at Kemble and having no trouble getting the PBN endorsement (assuming they don't cock up the check flight!) as recently as February 2020

Edit: the simulator does not need to be applicable to the type on your licence AFAIK - I forgot to add that comment.

FNW, ApolloHeli is correct. You do the PBN theory and sim check at Kemble. Our company did 5 last year as some of the first through the system there. They now offer a remote theory element and the Sim is based on a 355 but I think your licence is either signed as PBN on a particular type or PBN/IR. You can do your LPC renewal in a non PBN aircraft but then would have to do the PBN element in an approved sim within a short period of time of completing the LPC to retain the IR privileges, or so I’m led to believe. Speak to Elly at Starspeed as she has had to deal with a few different scenarios now.

I don't know how it's endorsed on UK licences but my Swiss licence simply has a "PBN" endorsement which is applicable to any and all type-specific IR ratings. It's entered separately from the type ratings on my licence, so doesn't need to be repeated for each new type added.

My opinion: I believe the idea behind the endorsement is to simply check for the knowledge of the PBN procedures and the differences compared to conventional instrument flight procedures, rather than checking how PBN is flown on each type of aircraft in its associated systems. In other words, I think they just want you show that you know how to program and fly an RNAV approach and the nuances that come with it (TAAs, fly-by vs fly-over waypoints, LOS requirements, use of AFCS during PBN operations etc). Once you've gotten the PBN endorsement you shouldn't need to re-do that course for each type you fly (although future proficiency checks require you to conduct at least one PBN approach IIRC).
