G2 accident KIIB (Independence, Iowa)

Major re-edit with more info. It hit a lamp standard on the corner of a hangar at 1630 local. Independence is about 60 miles away from home base at Dubuque, so he should have been thinking of getting back with sunset just after 5. Solo student. Wx conditions unknown.

Conjecture: if the pilot was still in the cockpit when the fire/rescue folks arrived, it would not be unusual for them to cut away the body of the helicopter to access, stabilize and extricate the pilot. I used to do this work myself, once upon a time. It tends to make the damage appear dramatically worse on any vehicle, cars, airplanes or helicopters.
aa777888 - I suspect you are disappointed not to be able to blame this on the fenestron........
