ICAO ATPL (H) IR to EASA Licence Conundrum

I would like some help in interpreting CAP 804, Section 4, Part Q, Subpart 1.3 please.

The explanatory note:

A holder of an ICAO ATPL seeking to convert to an equivalent Part-FCL licence must comply with all the requirements of Part-FCL. They may have full credit towards the training course requirements as per 1(3); but they must pass the Part-FCL ATPL theoretical knowledge exams and pass the Part-FCL Skill test as set out in Appendix 9.

Is this explanatory note stating that a holder of an ICAO ATPL (H) IR does not have to do the 15 hours or is it meaning that an ICAO ATPL (H) holder has credit for the theoretical knowledge instruction course only?

Do you have to do the ICAO IR to EASA IR minimum 15 hours as per CAP 804 Section 4, Part Q, Subpart 2, para 1.3, if you hold an ICAO ATPL (H) and looking to gain an equivalent or lesser EASA IR licence?

Hi Radman,

My understanding is that you don't need to book any training courses but you do need to sit all 14 ATPL theory exams. Once you have passed all of the exams you'll then need to complete an ATPL skills test (providing you already have that type rating on your ICAO license). If it's a new type rating, you'll have to complete a type rating course.

From Article 8 to Commision Regulation (EU) No 1178/2011:

4. Holders of an ATPL issued by or on behalf of a third country in accordance with Annex 1 to the Chicago Convention who have completed the experience requirements for the issue of an ATPL in the relevant aircraft category as set out in Subpart F of Annex I to this Regulation may be given full credit as regards the requirements to undergo a training course prior to undertaking the theoretical knowledge examinations and the skill test, provided that the third country licence contains a valid type rating for the aircraft to be used for the ATPL skill test.

You are exempt formal training for the exams, but given the nature of the questions you would be very unwise to do that You still have to take all 14.

If you have 500 hours on type and are current, then you will only need to do an LPC

Thanks guys for the information.

I have completed the 14 exams, have class 1 med, but as I understand it is only 350 hours for helicopters, as per Section 4 Part Q, Subpart 2, Annex III to Part FCL.

presumably if you get an FAA IR with a view to saving some cash on the EASA IR then it would make sense to get a suitable type rating as well e.g. EC135. Would you be required to just do a skills test to get it added to your EASA licence (assuming you already hold an EASA CPL with 70 hours PIC and all of your ATPL exams in the bank) or would it be more involved?

It would appear you need 350 hours to keep it to LPC only

I read it the same Phil, I take it that if you have 342 hours on type you would still have to do 8 hours training prior to the skills test.....incredible.
