DIY Due Diligence!

The UK CAA has today recommended that:

People looking to take specially chartered air taxi flights to meetings, conferences and events have been advised to check the operator of their flight has been approved before booking their trip.
Business community urged to check flights are legal before booking | CAA Newsroom | About the CAA

ps: The CAA has vowed to increase the number of areas in which the general public may assist in vetting the UK's aviation and aerospace industry and will advise of these opportunities in the near future!

Any UK-based individual, organisation or company offering flights in return for payment must have an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) issued by the CAA.
Hmmm, I wonder who's about to pop up and dispute this statement from the CAA...

The CAA are urging the public to do their job because they're unable to do it themselves. I was pretty much told this recently by a senior member of flight safety team.

Because the burden of proof is that of a criminal court they just don't have the powers, manpower and budget (and let's face it skills).

It's much better to hassle the people they know are trying to do a good job, but might have forgot to pack their Pooleys rather than get involved with the "private" flights going on in the background.

CASA introduced this concept many years ago.

AOC holder details are available online, no big deal. We've learned to live with it and it has become an asset in weeding out the shonks in the industry.

No, it's not.

Any UK-based individual, organisation or company offering flights in return for payment must have an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) issued by the CAA. This means they are regularly checked out by the CAA to ensure they maintain and operate their aircraft to stringent commercial air transport standards. Anyone requesting payment for flights without an AOC is therefore breaking the law, is putting passengers at risk and may be invalidating the life insurances of all on board.

The CAA is now reminding members of the business community to take care when choosing the operator of their flight. All UK AOC holders are listed on the CAA website, making it easy for people to check if a UK operator is approved to provide commercial air transport.

Bravo 73,
now you have just put it back into context by expanding your quote.

Your first quote said nothing about people and air taxi flights.

Picking on the CAA,

It really gets my goat so called professional pilots attacking the CAA. If you hold a Flight Crew or Engineers licence it should install at least a modicum of respect for the Regulator. The alternative s aviation anarchy.

It's a cheap shot picking on the CAA!!!

The 'context' was in Savoia's opening post.

One of our less illustrious stock inspectors / shooters during the mighty BTEC campaign has the nickname of "Shonkers."

He can be summed up this way, it's a true story. One very hot day three or four machines pulled up for a bit of recreational fishing on an estuary island. One of the pilots, nicknamed "Dundee" used to never stop talking. Shonkers has had enough - Dundee, bet you can't tell three lies straight up."
Without even blinking let alone drawing breath while he throws another cast, Dundee goes on - "Yep, you're a good bloke, everybody likes you and you got a big d***."
