On Channel 5 Right Now
'Monster Moves', transporting a new Coastguard S92 from the USA to the UK. Very interesting, with a few very silly 'Pythonesque' animations....
Careful with those blades there, vicar..

The predictable lie about Sikorsky having built the first helicopter, which would have been after 1940.
The Fa 223 flew in 1937 and was free hovered inside the Berlin Motor Show stadium by Hanna Reitsh in 1938.
The Fa 223 was followed by the Fl 282 Kolibri which saw operational service before any Sikorsky machine.
Damned journalistic rubbish as usual.

Can someone put me out of my misery please and explain why it wasnt flown across... surely it has the range.. i mean singles have been known to do the crossing,,, with range extenders.
Because it wouldn't have made such a "Way Over The Top" television over-dramatisation about very little !

Ed,
Bad timing unless you want to be hoisted off an unmanned rig leaving your new toy behind.
As to the earlier question on why the 92 wasn't ferried. The Canadian Govt do not see their new S-92's fit to fly over water or at night, and if you have an oil leak you have 12 minutes to ditch it.

And before either of these .. was Corradino D'Ascanio's co-axial D'AT3 helicopter which flew in October 1930 at Rome's Ciampino Airport in the presence of representatives from France's Fédération Aéronautique Internationale but .. there are popular concepts of helicopter history which have made the world's first helicopter the Sikorsky VS-300.
I suppose at the end of the day it depends on which definition of 'helicopter' one employs. That the R4 was the first popularly produced helicopter .. this one cannot deny and that the first helicopter flew in Italy is similarly irrefutable (for some)!
