The CAA staff examiners used to have a blanket examiner rating to test on any type, rated or not, but I don't know if that rule has gone with EASA or not.

I'm sure they would tell you if you give one of them a call.

That is precisely the problem, it is no longer possible for the UK CAA to by-pass the system and all examiners must now hold the qualification for which they are examining.

To be fair to the CAA, they recently gave an Exemption to another UK FE to examine me on an Annex II type for which I am otherwise the only UK examiner.
I think you'll find that they will look at each case on its merits.
But their hands ARE tied if it's an EASA type.
