Just received an email from the DLR asking for some help with a survey:

Within the project AllFlight the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Institute of Flight Guidance is working on diminishing the problem of piloting helicopters in degraded visual environment. Thus DLR is currently developing 3D conformal symbology for a head-tracked binocular see-through helmet-mounted display (HMD). This enables the pilot to stay eyes-out and simultaneously see relevant flight information on the visor of the helmet without having to look at the head-down instruments. Conformal refers to "an object that spatially overlies its far domain counterpart and moves in synchrony and equal amplitude with that counterpart" [1]. For example, if an obstacle is presented on the HMD, it is positioned in the exact line of sight where the actual obstacle is situated and will move according to the movement of the helicopter and head position.

The questionnaire contains preliminary design solutions for different flight demands including the representation of obstacles, route information and threat areas. It is particularly important for us to receive a user-centered perspective on the usability of the proposed designs.

Therefore you are kindly asked to provide your opinion on the existing design proposals and further comment suggestions of improvement.

The overall aim of the development is to provide an intuitive and well-arranged presentation of relevant flight information within the pilots’ forward field of view that allows for fast and accurate perception of the environment to enhance situation awareness, avoid spatial disorientation and reduce workload.

Just completed survey - interesting stuff, but not a lot that would help in brown-out/ white-out.
