South Korean police on Wednesday began a rescue operation for a maritime police helicopter that went missing off the southern island of Jeju.
The Aw-139 chopper, which was carrying five persons, including four crewmembers, lost contact with the command center at around 20:40 local time after picking up a policewoman from a maritime patrol boat.
The helicopter was on a medical evacuation mission at the time of the incidence, according to the Jeju maritime police. Italy's AgustaWestland manufactured the chopper and it was deployed on the island earlier this week.

JEJU ISLAND (Yonhap) -- Rescuers on Thursday discovered the body of a female officer as well as the wreckage of a Coast Guard helicopter that went missing with five crew members on board Wednesday night near waters off the southern resort island of Jeju, officials said.
The AW-139 helicopter took off from Jeju International Airport at 8:20 p.m. and picked up the deceased 28-year-old female officer, Lee Yoo-jin, who needed emergency assistance, from a patrol ship stationed in waters west of the island. After picking up Lee, the helicopter's crew lost contact with the command center, officials said.
Coast Guard officials have been continuing their search for the missing crew members as well as traces of the missing helicopter.
Twenty-one boats, one search plane and three maritime choppers were mobilized to the rescue operation near the sea area where the last phone signal from the missing helicopter was detected, according to officials.
The AW-139 helicopter, which was manufactured by Italy's AgustaWestland, was first deployed to Jeju last Friday.

Another 139 crash that nobody can find. You'd think all the lessons from the Dubai 139 and Almeria 139 would have been learned by now. Sat tracking works, ADELT doesn't.

Another 139 crash that nobody can find. You'd think all the lessons from the Dubai 139 and Almeria 139 would have been learned by now. Sat tracking works, ADELT doesn't.

ADELT = next to useless IMQHO. No replacement for real time tracking.
I also think regular cold eye reviews are a useful tool in these organizations - no vested interest BTW. SAR orgs, often have a fearless response culture......not all but some. I think it would be some comfort to be able to say "we are aware of the risks and have regular review of our Modus Operandi" to keep those cultures objective.
Above all RIP to the crews and thoughts to the families.
There but for the grace...etc.

Condolences to KCG Community, families and Korean public...
Do you know that helicopter equipped with HR 503 Series ADELT and it was operational? Why can't it be detected after crash ? As far as I know ADELTs start to give signal after helicopter crashes (g-switch activation) or downs to water (water activation). I don't understand why? why? it was not activated...
If anybody knows anything, please share his knowledge here...

yes Abu Dhabi, A6-BBB, not equiped with deployable ELT, just the standard one installed inside the tailboom along side the FDR, damage was so great the ELT was found along side the wreckage (massive vertical impact, flat belly first), not transmitting, wreckage in three feet of water or less.

I suppose you're mentioning Dubai crash, what about KCG helicopter? It should have deployable ELT. Offshore & SAR configured AW139 has HR 503 series ADELT as standard equipment. Any confirmation??????

The photos in the press don't show the port side were the HRSmith ADELT would be.
However this photo suggests no ADELT:

ADELTS may have a chequered history but there is also a long history of fixed ELTs failing on impact. The Cougar S-92 being one of the most recent cases.
The Caladonian/BHL ADELT on the PHI S-76C that had a bird strike in the GOM in Jan 2009 did work even after an accident that killed all but one on board.
Sat tracking is great if you actually monitor the data. Here is one case at Air Logistics in the GOM where false confidence in the data, inadequate flight following software and poor procedures may have delayed a rescue, fatally:

The helicopter’s emergency locator transmitter (ELT) beacon failed to activate.

The emergency beacon, manufactured by HR Smith 15-503-134-1, was found separated
from the support that attached it to the fuselage. The rest of the system, consisting of
the beacon ejection unit, the attachment unit and the configuration unit, was removed
from the fuselage, preserved in fresh water and sent to the manufacturer for analysis.
The beacon itself was not found.
The manufacturer concluded that the beacon ejection was triggered by g-forces above
the limit value and that the ejection process appeared to have been normal. No more
definitive conclusions could be drawn because the beacon, which contains the
transmitter and antenna, was not found.

Having that 'nice glass cockpit outfit' actually does mean that we look at the information that is being given. Whether we process it correctly is another thing.
Unfortunately people died and you are presuming that they lawn darted into water, nothing failed, they just flew it into the water.
