New York Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA)
Made my first flight in the newish NYC SFRA this week. A very pleasant surprise, with none of the hassle usually associated with all things New York. South along the west bank of the Hudson at 900 ft, a turn around the Statue of Liberty, and north along the east bank to the West 30th St. Heliport. Very courteous and helpful crew at the heliport. Fuel, landing, and parking fees more than most places, but not out of line considering that this is NYC. Very light traffic on a beautiful early spring day. Very straightforward procedures with no requirement to talk to ATC. There is an excellent tutorial at www.faa.gov on the new airspace rules - a must before wading in for the first time. That we in the U.S. can still make such a flight in the post 9/11 era is amazing to me; much credit for this is due the FAA, HAI, AOPA and others who kept their heads and reason while others were losing theirs, and collaborated to design a more effective traffic management solution for this complex bit of airspace.

In addition to those listed, kudos also go to Jeff Smith, Chairman of the Eastern Region Helicopter Council, the volunteer-led professionals group representing pilots and companies in the NYC-centered region. Jeff was at the table with the FAA on the Task Force, and made key contributions to the process to make sure the interests of and efficiencies for major stakeholders in this airspace, those of us who fly there for a living, were represented. Well Done, Jeff!
