My first 20 years of flying were in seized wings. When I took my first heli training flight, I was awed. I was an idiot student all over again, and the sheer challenge was both a curse and delight. Later, when my FW friends wouldn't fly because the crosswind was 17 kts., I'd practice pedal turns in the R22. Great fun, still a challenge. A big kick was taking my son along for the first time. He was about 13, doors-off on a summer day, and we hadn't hover-taxied more than 30 feet, when he exclaimed "This is cool!" It's hard to impress a teen boy. (At this point in my marriage, and my heli flying, I'd pick an hour in the cockpit over an hour between the sheets. Flying helis is still exciting!)

I just love it all!!!
I love How it glide when I pull down the collective. I love landing in my home (south of Spain), have a tea and continuous flying. I love flying in mountains, lakes, and by the see with the option of landing wherever I like, and I love flying at full moon night in summer time without doors in the lovely H269
Best regards

I love the freedom, the vertical departures, the doors-off thrill at low level, and I simply haven't had anywhere nearly enough. These days I'm restricted to watching other people fly, mostly in the simulator, and making them sweat when I make an engine start to pop.
I'm slowly getting to the point of realising that I simply won't ever have the money, short of a winning lotto ticket (which you have to buy to win!), to be serious about being a pilot.
Note to the young and stupid oops I mean inexperienced: get in young, and get established in your flying career before you get married ... or marry into a VERY rich and VERY generous family!

Low level at night, NVG, SAR , and no 2 flights are the same.
The fact that many people say that helicopters shouldn't fly and we prove them wrong everyday is a bonus!
I like it all.
All the best to all of you

Learning to fly, and subsequently flying, helicopters has taught me that you can achieve your boyhood dreams if you are lucky enough (even if it takes you 45 years to do it !!).
The day of my first solo flight is forever etched on my mind and is something that I never thought that I would ever achieve both from a financial and a confidence point of view.

From the first vertical takeoff to the touchdown after my commercial checkride, it has been just sheer joy! There is nothing....nothing like flying down the Chicago Lakeshore at 200ft and 85knots to show you what joy is!

As Leonardo da Vinci once said:
And who would know better than him, the creator of all our joys...
When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you will always long to return.

Capn - You will have to talk to Senior Pilot about that one. If I post stuff that is deemed as promo for a particular mag then I am in the $hit again
Thats why I have worded this thread the way it is.

Flying to the middle of a field in the pitch black of night with no ground lights, landing in a unlit lz surrounded by powerlines and trees, trying to get some shut eye in the back of a van, getting woken up at 4 am to fly low level over 100 acres of corn to keep it from freezing..........what a hell of a way to make a living

Flying over Newark at 1500 enroute to the Hudson river exclusion, with the big boys landing and departing right under us. Nothing like it.

As a new student I love every chance I get to fly, but I could also just spend hours looking at any and all helicopters. Still flying is where it’s at and I look forward to spending more time aloft this year.

Snail mail no more!
A years worth of whirlybird snaps arrived in Oz today. I think it's the only thing in over a decade of chopper involvement that didn't cost me anything! Thanks Ned.
