Flying in South California with fresh PPL

Hi Group.

I made my PPL last winter in florida on 300CBI and R22.
I would like to fly in south california in january.
Does somebody have some recomondations?
I would like to fly in some mountains and don't need snow allready in the valley.
Can I expect lazy R22s nearly everywhere because of economy?
I made my ppl plane some years ago in san diego and can remember crossing some nice mountains making the long cross country inland, having some plane to rent would be nice too.
Any experience is welcome.

Regards Ingo
