Sam Hoy's passing.
I’m sure that many who knew Sam have been informed, but for those who haven’t:
I’m sad to have to inform you that Sam Hoy passed away in the early hours of the morning on Saturday 17th October. He was in a place he loved, Gili Trawangan, Indonesia, as happy as I’ve seen him, and amongst friends.
Following a career in the Navy (Non flying, and then as a crewman), Sam embarked on his lifelong dream to fly helicopters the civilian route. He was a late starter making the jump at the age of 37.
I believe Sam learned to fly at Sloane Helicopters in the late 90’s, prior to working for Fast Helicopters at Shoreham. Sam then joined CHC Scotia, and has flown the AS332L / L2 as a commander in recent years. Most of his flying being on the North Sea out of Aberdeen, but he also enjoyed detachments to Australia and East Timor.
Most of us who worked with Sam at CHC Aberdeen will remember him being the ‘Grumpy Git’ in the crew room …… but, he was OUR ‘Grumpy Git’. Those of us lucky enough to get to know Sam a little better, would discover that Sam had a spirit as large as his frame.
He will be sadly missed.
Wherever Sam is now, the Surf will be up, the blues will be playing!....and he will still be blowing on his harmonica!
My thoughts are with Sam's family, colleagues in Aberdeen, and his many friends across the globe. If anyone has any memories or stories they’d like share of Sam, feel free.
As soon as plans for a service in the UK become clear, I’ll keep all notified.
There will be a small informal service on Gili Trawangan, Indonesia at sunset (5pm onwards) on Halik Beach, Friday 23rd October 2009.

I'm both shocked and saddened to hear this terrible news. I had the pleasure of doing my IR course along with Sam at Cabair some years back.I would also bump in to him from time to time when either in Aberdeen or Stavangor. A good allround bloke.

Hi Rosh the last time we talked , we where both getting changed out of our suits at Aberdeen to go home that was just a few days after you had come off your new bike. I had a lot of time for Sam we talked a lot in the crew room about his plans for his land, Hope he got it sorted in the end, its very sad news, nice man. Hope you are OK in your move.

Hi Rosh, I think the piece you have written above says it all.
It made me cry and that does not happen very often!!
You are right Sam could be a grumpy bugger but he wore his heart on his sleeve and we loved him for it.
I heard the story of his passing and I know you guys did all you could and it must have been horrendous to have been there. But at least Sam was with the mates he loved being with in the place he loved. Maybe he has found real peace at last.
Keep your chin up Rosh Sam was lucky to have a mate like you!!

A very sad day. Thanks for letting us know, Rosh.
I met Sam when I was contracting for CHC in Aberdeen and I remember him as a really larger than life character. Great guy to be around. He will be sadly missed.
Now I have finally hung up my headset, I only have PPrune to keep me in touch with the rotary world. Moving South soon in "full and final" retirement.

All indications were that of a heart attack, but still awaiting an official cause of death.
Still no news with regard to funeral arrangements.

Typical Sam. Can't keep his paperwork in order!
Sam's funeral has had to be postponed while Sam's family await official paperwork from Indonesia to be processed.
It is no longer taking place on Thursday 5th November.
New arrangements 'To be Advised' as soon as they become clear.
Thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

Thanks very much for the timely update on Sam's funeral Rosh. Was just about to head off in that direction. Please let me know of the latest arrangements. Sam had a video of himself playing the harmonica with the local band on his/your little island. It was on the planning computer a few times but kept getting erased by those who know better. If you had a copy of it and could post it l know everyone would be impressed

Peter, I haven't managed to be able to get a version of Sam Jammin' on the Island, that I can upload as yet.... I wonder if it's still there on one of the CHC planning computers in ABZ.

Cant help you with "Sam Jamming" but perhaps a guy called Brian Lawson, who has sat on his backside for the near past 40 years, might be able to do it for you.

I apologise for coming so very late to this thread - but I only found out yesterday that Sam had died, and I'm feeling profoundly saddened. Belated condolences to his family and friends.
I knew Sam 10 years ago when he was an instructor at Fast Helicopters in Shoreham; I was a newly-qualified ppl at the time. He really helped me out with the scary world of xc nav - without Sam, I'd have never gone to Wellesbourne...
Great guy, sadly missed.
