Old school...

I found some nice videos of:

...a Huey....

...a UH34 starting up...

...and the same UH34 doing an autorotation....

I don't recall seeing this accident before: the tail boom is fractured as the load begins to lift, the rest is just remarkable.

As for the casualty retrieval

This video has been shown to me during the CPL training and I remember discussing about it with my teacher (ex CH53G pilot from the German army).
I think he said something like this accident happened in Israel (or somewhere in that area) and that it was caused because the pilot had the stability augmentation system engaged and kind of worked against the machinery until it all broke apart (P.I.O.?).
I think he also said it was during a military showcase and the video shows the second or third attempt which then went terribly wrong.

I am sure someone can shed any more light on this?

I saw this video in Egypt in early 1989 at an Egyptian Air Force officers meeting at Almaza . I was told that the Israeli CH-53 was moving frontier markers on the Sinai when it happened. The Egyptians thought it was kind of funny since most of them had fought Israelies in previous years and didn't care for them. No cause was discussed beyond the obvious tail rotor failure.

This video is mentioned in a recent Heliops article on sling loads, the cause was apparently a vertical bounce heightened by the use of nylon straps.

As for the stretcher bearers .. their urgency to get away from the wreck would have overtaken their need to be safe with the casualty ..

There are some wonderful old films on the British Pathe site: this one of a Whirlwind about SARBE manufacture and use should appeal to crab@

SARBE Beacon

Whilst this film of a 1955 SAR demo was just a bit too realistic

I do like the "22 Squadron of Coastal Command" bit, though

Mi-26

re: the video of Chernobyl, Is that an Mi-26 that backs into the structure, or an Mi-17 or Mi-8 ?

Last edited by ecureilx; 6th Jul 2009 at 08:17. Reason: Maybe an Mi-8, instead of Mi-17

Its not a Mi 8, i think the silhouette looks more like an old Mi 6.

Ok, the last video proved it as a MI 8, in the first video the helicopter looks too stretched for a Mi 8, maybe due to widescreen video format...
