That's an RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) 350B3, and you may be correct that he could have done the hover exit parallel to the ridge. In most cases, the hook may be forced up into the belly on a sharp ridge landing (but no hook seems to be installed here). A balanced landing on the ridge also may be in order, and would have raised the blades off the ridge, and give Mr Thong a bit more room.
I'd have done a similar landing to the pilot, and never would even think of shutting down on that type of snowpack and ridge.
Regardless, great picture, no one got hurt, so successful day.

The center of the 350 landing gear is fairly well back from where the pilot sits. Had he landed a bit more forward on the apex, he would have been sitting out in the middle of nowhere, precariously balancing his ship. Alternatively, turning 90 degrees and setting down would have made it very difficult for the crew to egress - much less access the baggage compartment.
Digging the toes in like that seems a clever idea - the best solution, and one that I'm not sure even I would have thought of, lowlander than I am. A little forward cyclic and the ship stays "pinned" in place. Not to mention the fact that the 350 has about the shortest distance from the front of the fuselage out to the edge of the rotor disk of any helo I've flown.
Got to admire those mountain flying guys for their ingenuity.

OB, They DEFINITELY did not shut down in that picture. The camera shutter speed was fast enough to stop the M/R blades, but the T/R is still spinning.
I mentioned that I wouldn't have shut down ON the ridge in any situation, due to snow conditions.
PP#1, sitting the bear paws or skids on top of the ridge (at 90 degrees) may leave the pilot way out in space, but gives the crew the best egress....shouldn't be a problem. I use the skid or bearbpaw balance most times, just rotate your head right for reference to the ridge if you can't see anything below.
I agree that a landing parallel to the ridge may cause some hard times on them during loading and unloading.
I would expect the "Thong" is a climbing harness over light colored trousers ...if not...

The RCMP rescue was of two people who fell into a crevasse in the spring of 2000.
Cpl Dwayne Jennings (pilot) of the Vancouver Air Section of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police used a Eurocopter Astar B-3 to make 6 trips to the ridge.

The location was Panorama Ridge in Golden Ears Park in my hometown of Pitt Meadows British Columbia.
The team was Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue. Photos taken by SAR team member Kevin Thompson.
Thanks for the headsup.
I've added some info and a picture to your post.
Hope you don't mind.

I have over 3,000 pictures of helicopters now - people keep on telling me I'm obsessed but I don't beleive them...

This is one of my personal favourites, taken on a nice day last summer during my husband's training.

My daughter thinks this is the 'coolest' helicopter in the world. Are there any better pics of it anywhere?
