Quad A Day Three: On Condition Maintenance Showing up On Flight Line – Finally

Nashville, Tenn: It flashed up on one of the briefing screens – but probably few noticed. ‘It’ was a list of improvements to Army aviation component repair schedules caused by analyzing data produced by sensors attached to critical equipment. The process is key, in fact, to the Army’s new emphasis on Condition Based Maintenance and while it’s early days some hard improvements have resulted. The details are related to Apache and Black Hawk systems, and involve specific changes to inspection and monitoring schedules. A company – IAC – has moved out ahead of the pack in designing the sensing, collection and analytical software involved, and are responsible for getting the changes integrated into maintenance schedules. Talking with the media here, Col Les Eisner (P), a member of the South Carolina Guard explained that the process of getting applied metrics into the Army ‘system’ is a challenge but is being helped by a private-government partnership – this one involving the Soth Carolina Guard, IAC, and the airworthiness authorities with AMCOM.
.
Changes in Army emphasis are hard to find sometimes, but they show up in interesting places. One is the ‘re-balancing’ taking place at AATD (Aviation Applied Technology Directorate). The unit – which is sort of Army aviation’s version of Orange County Choppers – used to be focused heavily on UAVs (though it kept the R&D base alive across the board). But now things are changing and ‘we are looking much more at supporting current activities as well,’ says Col Bill Gavora, the commander. The new menu of tasks reflects concern – perhaps – that the emphasis on UAVs may have gone too far – leaving the regular equipment more vulnerable. Gavora is retiring to be replaced at AATD by Lt Col Steve Kihara, a well regarded test pilot who currently commands the Naval Air Warfare Test Center at Patuxent River.

Interesting I remember asking one of the Big OEM's reps if installing Hums would increase TBO on any components and I was told absolutely not . If the army experience shows it works will civilians follow ?.
