Landing fees

Airfields - Turweston ( just west of Silverstone circuit) landing fee is precisely nuffink if you take on 50 litres of fuel - not too difficult when I'm burning a litre a minute in the 44.....

Instant - I mean bowser waiting for rotors to stop 'instant' - refuelling and very friendly.

Odd landing arrangement through planning constraints but still only a 2 minute walk from the cheeeep cafe.

Hotels - We planned to fly into La Manoir Aux Quatre Saisons recently - at least until I discovered that they were going to stiff me for a landing fee.

I will never pay a landing fee at a hotel out of principal. Its just the same as having a ticket machine at the entrance for parking your car. Never...ever....

Check out Fawsley Hall near Daventry - just as exclusive but without that
'I've been stiffed because I flew in' feel about it. Landing fee there...? I'll let you guess. Very unusual for hotels to charge, its a great image thing to have a heli on the lawn. I recommend a boycot of all those who do.

If everybody with a heli felt as strongly as I do, boy would they be losing business!

Billesley Manor just to the west of Stratford Upon Avon is very heli friendly too..........

Raymotors Garage in Ramsey, Isle of Man. No handling fee, no coffee, no ATC Derv 101p / litre, Land Rover Discovery

Just shows how infinitely more cost-effective aviation is with regards to fuel. It is just the start up costs, and needing a long, wide road if you are in a plank.

Have I mentioned how sh*ite the Wx is today over here yet?

Good old USA

Sound like you guys need to move to the good old USA. Exchange rate better; 99% free landings at GA airports.

Another example of an expensive hotel is the Pendley Manor near Luton. A friend of mine was getting married there last year and so I thought that I'd fly in after the reception and then take the couple for a flight. The cost for landing there - £250 !

Obviously I told them what they could do with their landing fee.

St Andrew's

Landed with my wife at St Andrew's Bay Hotel for an overnight stay. I was met by 2 people who came over to the helicopter with 2 glasses of champagne and took our overnight bag. They then transported us an embarrassingly short distance in an executive people carrier to the hotel front door, where we were shown to the reception desk. Total cost : £0 and diner Bed and Breakfast was only £175 for the 2 of us.

The fact that it was my little R22 made no difference to the way we were treated. Great Place!

Angry RE... Hotel Landing Fee's :(

BOYCOT all Hotel's who charge Landing Fee's!

I could'nt agree more! A few years ago just after i passed PPL's
A friend and I used to fly into a local hotel in N.Ireland at least once/twice
per month for lunch etc.
They were only too glad to have us fly in (due to the attention it caused)
I contacted them just last week to fly in and was informed they now have a landing fee of £100 even if I was using their facilities.

No way am I using that place again!

I travel to many airfields and of course the charges vary from a few pounds to vast sums. I will only fly into Liverpool under extreme pressure, if at all as their charges are sickening( I use that word as I am at a loss to express the unreasonable charges which are in force at the GA terminal- a remote corner of the field). There are other high chargers but Liverpool Sir Jonh Lennon Airport is the worst value for money--are you listening Liverpool??

Head Turner:

Re Liverpool.

Certain members of ATC seem to have a special dislike of helicopters as well, especially on approach, to wit the idiot who said to me "You can't be on an IFR flight plan, helicopters aren't allowed to fly IFR." and then proceded to f me about for long enough for me to start wishing biblical horrors on him and all his familly and friends.

The handling agents are a nice bunch though and are always very helpful

start a new thread

Looking at the posts going around on this message board , why dont we start a thread which has B & B`s with suitable landing areas, having travelled the UK extensively by helicopter and had to find B & B`s (from the air if need be) i could recommend a load, facilities leave a little to be desired in some places but in others you could land a fixed wing on the amount of field room they have(figure of speech).

What do ya think shall i start one

That way helicopters could bypass the expensive airfields

Colonel Mustard;

Bloody good idea. We could do with a guide like that. Unfortunately our customers still want to go to the hotels which rip them off and we still have to get fuel at the ridiculously priced airfields.

Not a bad idea, i reckon a poll of some sort might be needed first to see what the uptake might be, (mustard walks off thinking)

Have a section for helicopter friendly pubs as well. I am sure you would get lots of contributions from this forum.

I started on something that does this a while ago as part of another project I am working on, you can try it out here http://www.griffin-helicopters.co.uk/landingsite.asp
It isn't finished and the fuel and fees bits aren't wired up yet but I am sure you will get the idea.
It will be up and down over the next few days so if it doesn't work try again later.
Particularly useful can be the nearest landing sites to Lat Long / Grid Ref.
There are 1400+ sites in it at the moment, some are airfields, some hotels, helipads pub etc.
I can create an editable comments list for each one quite quickly. might come in useful. I'd be interested to know what people think.

Just to add to the chorus, I'm happy to provide free web / email hosting too, should it be required.

A few choruses of "Alice's Restaurant" and we may have the makings of a Revolution here!
