– Two men sustained chest injuries after their helicopter crashed on Catalina Island yesterday afternoon.
The aircraft ran into power lines, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.
The 1977 Hughes helicopter left Gillespie Field in El Cajon and went to McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, where the pilot and his passenger linked up with a friend flying a second helicopter. They intended to go sightseeing on Catalina, the FAA spokesman said.
But the trip ended about 2:30 p.m. when the Hughes helicopter struck power lines and crashed in Geiger Cove, a remote part of the island, the Coast Guard said.
One man was taken to the medical center at the University of California Los Angeles in critical condition, a Los Angeles County fire dispatch supervisor said.
The other man was taken to the medical center at the University of Southern California with moderate injuries.
It was unclear which man was the pilot. Their names were not released.
The Hughes helicopter is owned by Civic Helicopters, a company employee said. The company is based at Palomar Airport in Carlsbad.

The other -- a Jet Ranger -- touched down, and its occupants helped rescue the two people aboard the downed chopper, which is based in San Diego, Channel 9 reported.
The unidentified pair, whose injuries were reportedly serious, were taken to a Baywatch patrol boat at the Isthmus Pier to be transferred to a helicopter and flown to a trauma center.
It was not immediately known what type of mission the helicopters may have been on, or what caused the crash.
