Setting up an RF. Instructor may be needed!

May be about to go it alone and set up an RF.

I have the location, nearby population, an R22, business experience, and a bit of spare change. I don't however know a great deal about these things (neither did Branson) and I don't have an instructor.

I know I have to register as an RF and this would require a QFI who will satisfy the CAA (So many abbreviations in this game!). So that's the first hurdle that someone may be able to help me out with. PM me to get full details.

From then on I suppose it's sheer hard work and determination that will take things further.

I am aware however that as an RF I can only do AB-initio and not conversions or type ratings. For this I would need to be an FTO. I have been trawling the CAA site for more info on this. Can anyone help me out. What are the extra requirements to become an FTO from an RF?

I would appreciate any thoughts on all of the above.

Thanks,

Hi

Don't know about rotary, (but should imagine it's the same). As RF, you do not have to have a designated QFI, so can just go about finding your instructor(s).

Should you become a FTO in the future, then yes, you will require a QFI, along with many more stringent regulations

The RF to FTO or TRTO answers are all in CAP 682. Its not available on the web, so documedia are the usual source.

You DO need full instructors to supervise any FI(R)s.

The RF process is easy, fill in a form, nominate your instructors, say who will supervise FI(R)s and nominate your aircraft.

The admin side of the FTO is considerably more detailed.

You are told what premises, what post holders, what records must be kept etc.

I've done the R22 owning and renting to a school, the working for a school as an instructor without your own aircraft and more recently, the RF paperwork. All have their advantages and disadvantages.

Feel free to call if you want an honest discussion on the pros and cons.

Thanks for the info.

CAP 682 is out of stock from Documedia. Any one got one to sell? Or any other places I might get hold of one?
