Different parts and servicing life
Could anybody give me any idea whether there is any major difference (apart from the engine power that is) between the 341 and the 342?
In particular, is the main transmission the same and is the overhaul/maintenance life interval the same for the key parts. Looking at some of the engine particulars, and other data on the web it would appear that the Astazou 14 engine, especially on the military verision can produce much more power. I am not sure if this is the same for the civil version or whether the French Military had any sort of performance governor removed.
One other point, does any documentation exist that lists the various component parts of the "Stretched" kit that some Gazelles have, looking on the web it appears to be an STC but I have never found any parts lists etc for it?
Any documents, pointers or "justified" data gratefully received.

there was a requirement for new helicopters that could carry more weight
sales were good so they made the 342 series which they used a head upgrade ,mrgb upgrade and fenestrom upgrade and various other upgrades mostly from the experence they had with the 341 and a new engine the astazou xiv {14} which was more powerfull
the civil customers that had bought the 341 didnt do many upgrades but the militarys around the world still wanted to upgrade their 341s for more weight so they used the new airframe parts made for the 342 and upgraded their engines to get some more power from them like the astazou 111n to 111n2 for the brits and 111c to 111c2 for the french
hope i explained it is a bit hard to put in writing
Re the stretched kit that is something i always wanted to know i know lots of parts have a AMR reference behind the part number, i have a throttle cable in stock which is longer and carrys the amr number
also i would like to find out the paperwork on what is required to change a 341 to a 342 i know its possible there is a few flying but i cant find a stc or papers anywhere can anyone help
Where in the world - MoD Sales
MoD Sales of Grantham (also known as Witham SV) had 30x Ex Mil Gazelles they were looking to sell for about £75 to £100K each.
Some for as little as £30K for spares.
Interestingly enough - one guy I spoke to about them - spoke to a "gazelle specialist" (I don't know who but there cant be that many) who advised him not to touch them with a bargepole.
It would be a co-incidence if it were the same batch that were under offer now. It would be even more of a co-incidence if it were the same gazelle specialist that had made the offer.
BTW - I really really want to fly / fly in a gazelle if someone is feeling benevolent! I spent 7 years in the military and couldn't get a ride in a gazelle!!!

This looks like a batch recently retired from the Army.
Two things that you can count on:
They have been lovingly cared for over many years
You are unlikely to get any form of C of A other than a Permit to Fly.
You know that you are getting old when:
Aircraft being sold off are in one of your many log books
An aircraft that you flew ends up in a museum.

So, VH-VAS is no more a Gazelle reg... I wonder is "she" still airworthy?
Btw, the National Parks and Wildlife Service used to operate two SA.341G, VH-WLS & PWS, both w/o (crashed 1981 and '85) :-(

Regarding the Aussie Gazelle VH-VAS, I think its rego later changed to VH-ONE but that now belongs to a JetRanger. It was kept at Moorabbin from what I remember and I don't think it's in the country anymore.

Hi. But can you actually carry passengers in an ex army 'permit to fly' only, privately owned Gazelle, without them being described as 'flight crew' or 'ground support staff?'
I've heard this situation has something to do with the engines. Military engines are not 'certified' for civilian use but another type of engine is!
Can you throw any light on this?
Tell me, what country does that 'HA' registration belong to?
Why, can Soko Gazelles carry passengers? Why can't ex army Gazelles carry passengers? Is this something to do with the military engines not being certified for civilian use? Can someone throw some light on this? No point having a five seater if I can't use the other four!

Gazelle civil certification
Iankav
i don't think the problem is just the engine, more that it is the Type Certificate build spec as identified by S/N of the airframe. Many years ago up in Blackpool I was with a company who believed they had sold 2 x UK reg Gazelles to an outfit in New Mexico. All surveyed, flown and price agreed, the whole programme stalled when we tried to obtain an Export C of A for them. The S/Ns (and thus the build spec) didn't feature on the (DGCA) Type Cert. Both machines were built by Westland and their discrete S/Ns were accorded CAA Reg only (??????).
you could get a better picture of the current situation by talking to MW Helis at Stapleford, thery're the experts on such matters ~ VFR
