HAI/ Vega$ Day One

For those who could not make it . I do have bad news...........The place was packed and its a Great Show. All the Major Manufacturers are here with the latest toys. Even saw Mr.Sikorsky checking out all the exhibitors. Of course the S-92 was there. MD, Bell, Eurocopter, Kaman, Schweitzer, and yes Robbies, all there plus more. Some Beautiful Paint schemes and loads of Helicopters with additional toys, avionics etc. Aeronautical Accessories had one of the prettiest and of course all their after- market stuff.
Las Vegas is noted for having a huge exhibition hall and Im telling you after five hours of walking around I still think I missed a few that were eager to talk no matter if you were a Pilot or a Corporate buyer.
Im sure you will see the results in some of the major Publications that come out next month. But if you are close to Las Vegas, you should try and make it for at least one day. Well worth the day pass price.

Anyway, it was great for the day, now back to reality and work tomorrow.Hello Grand Canyon..................

OK smart-arses -- They are last year's pics. I was trying to add some 'atmosphere' for people who can't be there.
I've removed them now we've got some 2004 photos.

Now for some 2004 news ...........

Bell news

600th 407

Bell has secured a firm purchase order for its 600th Bell 407. The aircraft will be delivered in 2nd Quarter 2004 to a customer in South Africa and will be used for corporate transportation in the region.

The Bell 407 certified in February 1996, and deliveries began soon afterwards. In November 2003, the existing 407 fleet logged one million flight hours. Operators fly Bell 407 helicopters in 41 countries around the world.

(Bell delivered 193 new helicopters in 2003, a 20+% increase over 2002.)

S-92: 22 firm orders

Jeff Pino, Sikorsky’s senior VP for marketing announced that S-92 sales are well on track from what the company forecast two years ago: 22 firms orders, 17 options being negotiated and four more under ‘deposit agreement.’
He didn't give details of the customers involved, but the first commercial delivery was to PHI this week.
Pino didn't give the value of the S-92 order book but industry sources believe it's in the region of $380 million - not including the options.

Robinson news from HAI

R44 Police helicopter provides new airborne service
Source: Robinson Helicopter Co <http://www.robinsonheli.com/>
17 March 2004

Heli Expo 2004: Las Vegas, NV ˆ Merced County Sheriff‚s Department and Silver State Helicopters are at Heli Expo 2004 Booth 34 with their successful new airborne law enforcement service. Using a R44 Raven II Police Helicopter, Silver State designed a unique program to bring helicopter operations to police departments unable to afford their own aircraft.

What makes this program unique is the allocation of helicopter time. Based in Las Vegas, the R44 Police Helicopter and pilot fly monthly to Merced, Calif. and work for five consecutive days, without a maximum limit on flight hours. The aircraft then returns to Las Vegas or moves on to other contracts. This service is offered at a low rate, allowing law enforcement agencies to experience the benefits of airborne support without the massive capital investment. The agencies are free to increase their monthly allotment or request a helicopter all month at anytime. Silver State provides both aircraft and pilot.

„We talk to a lot of sheriffs who believe they need a big turbine helicopter, so they go without while they try to raise the funds,‰ explains Tim Nelson, Silver State law enforcement pilot and sworn police officer. „When we put them in the R44 they go crazy. They can‚t believe it has the speed, visibility, and range of a turbine at one-third the price.‰

Since the helicopter began operating in November 2003 it has made a large impact on Merced County. The R44 helped police apprehend gang members, find a missing 2-year-old girl, and recover important incriminating evidence. „The FLIR is an important piece of equipment that makes this program successful,‰ Nelson says. „We used the helicopter to follow a shooting suspect until he was apprehended, then flew back along his path with the FLIR looking for a weapon. We found the gun in a ditch. It glowed bright on the FLIR, still hot from being discharged.‰

Merced County Sheriff Sergeant Nathan Todd sees the helicopter as a money saver for the agency. „It is working out really well. It‚s cost effective for us, but we don‚t have to pay the bills to maintain it. In fact, because we have the aircraft we can contain a larger area with less personnel. We‚re saving money. I can‚t believe we‚ve been going so long without a helicopter and we may now even expand.‰

Silver State chose the R44 Police Helicopter for this program due to its cost, equipment, and flexibility. „It has the equipment we need to provide first class service; FLIR, searchlight, video recorder, radios, and scanner. We can go from one department contract to the next and all we have to do is reprogram the police frequencies in the radio,‰ Nelson explains.

Here are a few pictures of Heli-Expo 2004 in Vegas.
Unfortunately I spent only one day at the expo but could see that many of us were like kids in a candystore...

Thanks for posting the pics, bell4can.

The S-92 looks superb!
The last time I saw it was on the production line at the Bridgeport plant late last summer. Two of the things which struck me at the time were that the cockpit was very spacious compared with many others - almost like a modern 'airliner', and the outstanding visibility from the cockpit.

BTW, any idea why they had the old Lama on display?
Out of idle curiosity, I did a quick check on the reg and came up with this interesting snippet.
NTSB 14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation
Accident: April 17, 1988 in NEAR CENTRAL, AK
Aircraft: AEROSPATIALE SA315B, registration: N65185
Injuries: 2 Minor.
THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND LANDED AT THE 'HOT' REFUELING SITE AND WAS ATTEMPTING TO EXIT THE HELICOPTER FOR A CREW CHANGE. THE HOT REFUELING LANDING PAD CONSISTED OF A BLACK MEMBRANE WITH BUNDLES OF LATHS PLACED PERPENDICULAR TO THE HELICOPTER'S SKIDS TO PREVENT THE SKIDS FROM PUNCTURING THE MEMBRANE.
THE PILOT LANDED ON THESE LATHS AND FRICTIONED THE CONTROLS DOWN AND LEFT THE ENGINE AND ROTOR BLADES OPERATING AT FULL RPM.
WHILE HE WAS ATTEMPTING TO EXIT THE HELICOPTER IT SHIFTED REARWARD. HE JUMPED BACK IN THE SEAT ATTEMPTING TO REGAIN CONTROL. THE HELICOPTER LIFTED OFF THE GROUND, TURNED 180 DEGREES, AND CRASHED. THE REFUELER RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES.

The NTSB determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
JUDGMENT..POOR..PILOT IN COMMAND
POWERPLANT CONTROLS..IMPROPER USE OF..PILOT IN COMMAND
RELINQUISHING OF CONTROL..INTENTIONAL..PILOT IN COMMAND

Contributing Factors
REFUELING..ATTEMPTED..PILOT IN COMMAND
TERRAIN CONDITION..LOOSE OBJECTS
Nick
Did you arrange for the Sikorsky stand to be next to the restaurant, or was that by chance?
