Helicopter spraying chemicals crashes near Alexandria

-- A helicopter spraying chemicals for the Department of Natural Resources crashed into Lake Christina on Tuesday. Another helicopter rescued the pilot, who had minor injuries.
DNR spokeswoman Christine Dufour said the helicopter belonged to Teryjon aviation of St. Peter. The DNR hired the company to spray a fish-killing chemical called rotenone into the lake.
Dufour said the cause of the crash is not yet clear.
She also said the chemical won't cause an environmental problem for the lake. Spraying by other pilots resumed about an hour after the crash, she said.
Lake Christina is in the northwestern corner of Douglas County, about 20 miles northwest of Alexandria.

The pilot was rescued from the water by another helicopter pilot. The pilot involved in the crash has been identified as Stuart Allen. At his request, he was driven to a local hospital for observation. His injuries did not appear to be serious.
"It's unfortunate that an accident like this happened," said Ed Boggess, DNR Wildlife resource manager, "but we're grateful there doesn't appear to any serious injuries."

Glad to see the pilot's OK. As an aside, why would they be spraying fish killing chemicals into the lake ? Why not just let the local anglers loose ? Plus, how come a hopper full of said fish killing chemicals hitting the bottom of the lake "won't cause an environmental problem for the lake" ? Presumably 'cos they wanted to kill all the fish anyway.

I don't know about this incident, but in other cases where this sort of thing has been done in the states the reason for it was to try to kill a non-native species that was crowding out a native species. Fishing won't achieve the desired result.
