What is "Abbots"?

I live near Stansted, and on the radio Abbots if often mentioned ( as a place ). Where is it? What is it? I'm sure it isn't a VOR/NBD/Highlevel airway intersection point.

It's also the name of a cr@ppy bitter made by Greene King, but would have to concur with above comments, as they're more than likely referring to the SID/STAR wp over the airwaves as oppose to an alcoholic beverage, then again.......................

I cannot believe that anyone can describe Greene King's Abbot Ale as a cr@ppy bitter, unless they have only sampled the inferior stuff sold in cans at Tesco etc.

Try the real Abbot from a barrel in a nice Essex or Suffolk country pub and you will realise what a superior ale it is. So superior that some beer fan from Nats decided to use Abbot (brewed not too far to the north, at Bury St Edmunds) as STAR (Abbot1A) and hold for EGSS.

The same enthusiast is obviously a connoisseur of real ale, having included ADNAM in the STAR ( a reference to the excellent Adnams Ale, brewed in Southwold, Suffolk, where funnily enough I will be sailing into on Thursday night for a pint or three at the Ferry Inn ).

I apologise to PPRuNe regulars and Ash Bashers from 1999 and 2000 who will have read all this before and sampled the delights of Greene King beer at the Ash, but EGSS newcomers may not have been aware of the beer connection.

Perhaps we could do with a few more beer points for aviators: why not give Woodforde's, Ridley's, Nethergate's, Mauldon's, Tollemache Cobbold, Crouch Vale, Mighty Oak and other fine East Anglian beers a mention?

I was thinking along the lines of RIDLEY, CROUCH, MIGHTY, TOLLY or MAULDON.

Might come in handy if the proposed new runways are built at Stansted, especially the one planned for the north of the field running about 27/09. STARS for this runway would line up quite nicely with Ridley's brewery at Felstead and the Mighty Oak brewery at Maldon with holds at TOLLY, near the Tollemache Cobbold brewery at Ipswich and another hold at CROUCH near the Crouch Vale brewery at South Woodham Ferrers.

I live near Bedford and if they can't manage to transport it to my local without screwing it up then they'd better stick to making Red Stripe.

Been to Southwold to visit the old brewery - fantastic place, like going back in time. They still use a Horse & Cart to transport the barrells around the town!

Just another point - all waypoints are made up of five letters and two syllables (whenever poss) - hence it's called Abbot and not Abbots.

Yep I know about the usual requirements for naming waypoints etc but sooner or later they are going to run out of ideas and may have to make 'em longer!

If everyone can cope with VORs with names as long as Brookmans Park, Lambourne and Barkway etc they could soon get to grips with my ideas.


As for Southwold I will be sailing into the harbour tomorrow, having a quick one ( perhaps a pint of Broadside to maintain the nautical theme) at the Ferry Inn next to the moorings then strolling up to the town for a nice crab salad supper at the Sole Bay Inn, directly opposite the brewery.

You are right about Adnams being a step back in time with drays delivering to pubs around the town. But their beer is top notch and you can't beat any Adnams ale served in the brewery's own pubs in Southwold.

My children loved the place when they were younger and were always happy to spend our annual fortnight's summer holiday there. We always rented houses near the brewery and the smell of mashing in the morning always set me up for a pint at lunchtime. Can't wait to get back there again tomorrow.

Gotta agree with Mr Stan Sted about the pukka Abbot Ale. Wetherspoons do it for £1.60/pint!!

However, it tastes just as good outta the cans/bottles to me....

Like Admans as well. Ruddles good too. Looks like the 80s fashion of Real Ale in 2 litre bottles is coming back!!!!!

Just got back from sailing trip to Southwold and can confirm that the Adnams beer was in sparkling form, as always. Broadreaching in 20 kts of wind made it an especially fast trip leaving time for beers in the Harbour Inn and also the Bell at Walberswick. (WALBERS would make an excellent reporting point)

PS does anyone know anything about the secret stuff that has been going on at Orford Ness over the years. Every time I sail past that place with its nuclear test sites and radio masts, I always mean to find out what really happened there in its MoD days.

Wow! What a great website. Some brilliant background on Orford Ness. I had no idea that some amazing flying and bomb testing went on there. The nuke test stuff is also pretty spooky.

I remember a beer named "Feelinfoul" in a pub somewhere near RAF Brawdy many moons ago, not sure of the correct Welsh spelling though.

Would be a great name for a reporting point.
