What about JAA licence in foreign country ? (under local licence)

Hey guys,

Tittle may not clear...but here my question :

I am going to fly in asia under the local licence, but I keep my JAA licence in my bag of course.
This is a CPL JAA licence (not atpl yet).

- so, do I need to come back to Europe to keep my IR current every year ?

If I don't do renew my IR, it's expired, but let's face it, I don't need my JAA licence for the moment...so another strategy I think about :

Can I wait to get the hours for the ATPL licence requirements and take the ATPL test, despite my IR expired ? possible or not ?

In the JAR FCL I did not see anything about getting an IR current to get the ATPL licence...

What would you do ? any suggestion ?

Thanks a lot for your help
