Use of Oxygen mask on flight deck
Having just done my TRUCE - or Emergency Training (or whatever it's called these days) on the Sim I could do with a bit of help to clear something up.
What is there general consensus on use of O2 masks on the FD after, say, a smoke in the cockpit or emergency decompression type scenario?
If any smoke was cleared and you had windows open below FL100 (presuming this is standard practice - is it?) would masks still be used as a precaution until you were on the ground - even if all appeared to be well again?
Or would you discard the Darth Vader effects box as soon as is medically or physically possible?
Also, like I say, what are your SOP's regarding such incidents?
Any help greatly appreciated

IF you ever get the chance sometime try opening the window in your jet.
Did it in a 727 once. There is no way you can communicate with the 200kt noise exept on mask and earpiece intercom, so for that reason alone you will probably wind up staying on Oxygen.
Otherwise if everything is sealed up cabin is 10k or below, off with the masks...

With a loss of pressure and an emergency descent, when at FL100 or below its masks off, which makes communication alot easier and nicer. If its smoke then unless you are 200% sure you have stopped the source AND you have cleared every last bit of smoke from the flight deck I would suggest you leave the mask on. Its never happened to me but I can see no reason to take the mask off if there is even the slightest chance there is still some smoke in the cockpit. Don't forget, it could be poisonous fumes, how will you know? Better to keep the mask on and go land somewhere and check it out I reckon.
I'd open the window. On the ground. Unless something was on fire and it was windy.
