Calculate Distance to TOC

Hi

This is probaly a really silly question, but I will ask anyway, flying on an A319, ATC sometimes ask you how many miles will you reach FLxxxx during Climb.

How can you work it out quickly doing it mentally without reference to the FMGS,

Thanks in advance.

Look at current ROC. Estimate ROC at level-off altitude. Use the average. Estimate your miles/minute by the Mach*10 method. Do the math.

Avg ROC 1000 fpm. 10,000' to go => 10 minutes. Mach .75 ~ 7.5 mi/min. Distance ~ 75 mi.

It really isn't rocket surgery or brain science.

Sorry if that is a bit unkind, but can you really not work it out without someone spelling it out for you?

Intruder is on the money and possibly more benevolent than I.
