Concorde Pilots
Can anyone help settle a bet. I was told a while ago that more people have been in space than having piloted Concorde. I found on the interweb that about 450 people have been into space, however, I can't find any figures for the number of rated Concorde pilots.
Anyone out there able to help?

USA Concorde pilots
Braniff had some 40 pilots rated on Concorde for their interchange with AF and BA between JFK and DFW. One of my acquaintances, Kenneth Larson was one of the captains. He flew Concorde for 1 year in the 1979-1980 period.

I met Kenn in a "pilot bar" at the Miami Airport in the early 1980s, after he had lost his job with the Braniff bankruptcy. While talking "airplane" we thought he was bragging and lying like all pilots do, and claimed to have flown Concorde. All of us laughed at him, until he went to his wallet and presented his FAA pilot certificate with his Concorde type rating...

So you can add a few guys from Texas to the list...
Happy contrails

you forgot to mention Flight Engineers in your numbers. How many were there?
British Airways - 57
Air France - 56
(From 'The Concorde Story' by Christopher Orlebar)

So, thus far we have 135 BA plus 128 AF plus 40 Braniff plus 113 Flight Engineers plus say 20 for Test Pilots and Training Captains which I make 436, so pretty close to the 450 or so (not counting the latest 3 Chinese, I assume!!) in space. Don't think this bet is over yet!! Of course, if you restrict it to those who actually PILOTED it, am I correct in saying the Flight Engineers would not count in the total??

Now Icare, be nice to Flight Engineers...

I only fly old and tired 747-200s... never piloted a Concorde.
Although I mention I was a passenger in a Air France Concorde between JFK and CDG once.
As far as the Flight Engineer is concerned, he is my cockpit VIP...
I have "soloed" 747s with worthless F/Os, just qualified to sit on their hands.
But as far as F/Es are concerned, they were always "ready" to keep me out of troubles.

Some F/Os are just present to shield F/Es from bird strikes.
Happy contrails

F/E's? Yes those were the days. That 3rd pair of eyes in the cockpit was a real blessing on many occasion.
Fully agree with what your said about a good F/E, as they are worth their weight in gold. I also could work "the front" of the cockpit, single handed if necessary but wasn't prepared/able to have to keep looking over the right shoulder constantly.
I didn't fly Concorde I hasten to add!

Concorde F/Os
I met Chris Orlebar when I was a youngster.
He was a skipper on the BA LGW 737 fleet circa 1992ish?
Nice bloke, sold me his book too (Sales pitch not required)..
He partially influenced my choice of career.
So, if you are reading this or to anyone who can
pass this message on, a big Thankyou.

Checked one of them out few years back when he wanted to take some flight attendant totty (more than one) on trip over grand canyon. Didn't tell me he had concorde time, found it in his logbook. Bit rusty on local procedures but fine to let loose after a bit of density altitude chitchat, talked him into taking a 182. Pleasant enough chap though.
