LHR; dual runway operation certification?
hello,
does anyone know when heathrow will get dual runway operation? its not a secret that slots are at a premium, and carriers are fighting for slots....
allowing aircraft to perform parallel landings would obsviously decrease conjestion....
thanks
Scott

Might decrease congestion the air but likely to increase it on the ground.
I think it's a government decision to operate Heathrow's dual runways in mixed mode and is one of the options available to increase runway capacity. There are many things to consider and therefore any decision is not likely to happen quickly.

They frequently use both runways for landing around 7am and parallel landings have been used, under certain weather conditions, during delays for many, many years. I wrote a magazine article about the procedures back in the early 60s so the idea has been around a helluva long time.
The full-time Mixed-Mode operation, with both runways being used all the time for landings and take-offs is, I feel, some way off. The airport is very small compared to other major airports and, as intimated above, the ground control problems would be immense. It also requires more radar controllers to function properly and those people are as rare as hens teeth.
