How Much Fuel

Hello,

I'm giving a presentation to a company in the aviation business in a couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone knew how much fuel in terms of money and lbs is used to taxi to and from a stand.

It would really help me if anyone had some figures,

Best Regards,

It really depends on a number of variables:
The airport in question and distance involved. Do any runways need to be crossed?
Type of aircraft.
Time of taxi
Company policy, ie are any engines shut down.
Weather.
Work in progress and taxiway condition.

As well as those listed above, there are many others.

What ever the variables are. Most if not all airlines have a set taxi allowance based on historical data.

Before you give your presentation, it might be worth finding out which aircraft, and which airports the company uses, so then you can find out more specific info.

A320 fuel burn is approx 7kg per minute per engine at idle thrust. We allow 200kg for engine start and taxi which is usually more than sufficient. Easterly operations at Heathrow are our main exception; up to 400kg burned before getting airborne is not unusual.

GHB100R Depending on parking gate and runway configuration at Heathrow the taxying distance could be anything from 100 metres to several kilometres.. Every situation is different so you'd have to calculate an average based on the shortest and longest distances..

I was fortunate enough to occupy the jumpseat on Speedbird 11 (BA 744 LHR-SIN) about 13 years ago. I remember our FOB at startup was 151,000kg and the 1,000kg was taxi fuel. I didn't look at what we actually burnt prior to take-off however.

Great trip and great crew.

Regards.

1,000kgs is a good average for the B747-400 - though I have loaded 3,000kgs and used it all + some contingency fuel! (JFK -need I say more?).

Notice the above posts are mostly by pilots and none of them know how much it costs--what does that tell you about saving the planet?(and the airline)

Fuel cost will differ for each airfield. In our case we are given the cost of fuel for a given station as a percentage of our base station (100%) and encouraged to tanker if economically prudent.

Llanfairpg; I do know how much it costs, I just didn't see that bit of the original post. Latest ballpark figure I heard (about 3 months ago) was that we were paying about £400 per tonne.

A330...block fuel consumption for start-up and taxi is approx 25kg/min...400kg taxi fuel is sufficient for most airports, considering no delays or special wx ops....
