female pilot shoes

Not sure if this is the right forum but I'm sure someone will move it if its not!

My girlfriend is about to start flight training. What footwear do female pilots wear? Can you fly with heels? Do airlines have rules about what type of shoes you can wear?

Thanks

For practical reasons I wouldn't recommend shoes with too big a heel. Get a dainty pair of Dr Martens (Gibson, three holes). Once broken in they are comfortable and smart and they do the job. About £50 and they should last a longer than a modern marriage!

Shoes with extended heals can be very dangerous in certain A/C. It is possible to have the extended heal jammed between the rudder pedal (dead/dying engine) and the cockpit floor.

A Learjet crashed after EFTO from Amman, Jordan years ago. The handling pilot was wearing cowboy boots and the heel became jammed between the rearward moving rudder pedal and the floor. IIRC.

It is for this reason I will not allow a F/O to wear high healed shoes/boots in an A/C that I am the PIC.

As most women don't totter about in high heels that much anymore, except for saturday nights and weddings. The answer is fairly straightforward. Any normal flat heeled shoe that's comfortable and secure on the foot. All women have quite a few in their wardrobe. Obviously flip flops and mules are not necessarily sensible because they might come off and lodge somewhere awkward.

I remember an extreme example of 'what not to wear' when flying when I saw a girl student pilot pre-flighting a 152 in a floaty red cocktail type dress with matching high heels. A more bizarre sight I have rarely seen. Particularly striking and exciting was seeing here climb up to check the fuel quantity. Why is it you never have a camera handy when you really need it?

I used to fly with a lady Captain who looked the business in high heeled court shoes, black stockings and above the knee skirt.....Jeeez. Watching her climb into her seat was an experience I will never forget.....!!!

Depends whether she intends to wear a skirt or not.

A lot of ladies wear a female chelsea boot or similar with a low heel (with trousers). Female pilots in skirts are quite a rarity these days
