Things got a bit confused, when Miami Center kept on calling us "Argentine Learjet - Alpha - Bravo - Charlie... that does not appear to be much of an abbreviated call to me
Once I came back into country after a three month around the world trip. We were so used to using N123AB rather than Falcon 123AB we kept using the November call sign. The second controller in Cleveland Center (Yeah, we went the wrong way around the world, west bound) chewed us out for not using Falcon 123AB. I was too dang tired to argue with him and agreed. But when he handed me off I used the November call sign and told him to recheck the controller's handbook.
The next guy was really nice and cleared us direct to OKC. (Okay, I did beg a little. )
Now, to be honest sometime abbreviating call signs on private/corporate aircraft in the US can cause problems due to similar ending call signs. Once I flew an aircraft that ended with 8GA. There were four aircraft going into PHX one day that ended with 8GA. So that could have been the reason for your experience, but still to use the registered country name in the call sign, seems dumb to me.
Well, just a bit thread creep...
I always use Nxxxx and do not, anywhere, say Challenger xxx, for a silly reason. First day in the plane, had not flown civil in 18 years, instructor giving me bounce drill. Call for clearance, "Citation xxxx, Information Bravo", loud snickers and hoots about wrong type. Amazing what the mind remembers when placed in old, but vaguely, familiar surroundings.
My other cudgle, why can't the ICAO be brought around to a standard transition level? Yes, yes I know about state's authority, ICAO cannot mandate, Chicago Convention, the whole bleeding lot, but this should be no-brainer.
