fuel diversions

Just after some advice. I recently went on holiday to Thailand and flew with Thai airways, upon checking in we were advice we would have to divert to Copenhagen initially to get fuel from there due to the fuel shortages at Heathrow.

I asked the manager if this was due to a shortage as specified on a sign at checkin or due to the costs? The answer from the manager was it was due to costs.

My question is can an Airline do this if the flight is advertised as a direct flight and indeed can I ask for any compensation for the delays incurred?

Thanks for any advice.

If you didn't have to change planes in CPH then the flight was still Direct. Non-stop however it was not.
