Fed up with poor Captains
maybe it is time to talk about the guys in the Left hand seat...
Captains, if you don't like some First Officer's skills, teach them.
You should be sufficiently teached already to play the "boss", let us join in.
Captaincy is not only about flying-abilities, experience and airmanship, it is also being able to be a manager, team leader/player, representative of your aircraft's Country of registry AND being an Officer in general.
And that is where unfortunately some fail miserably. Probably not due to incompetence, but due to lack of training .
This is just a lighthearted post, and I don't mean to offend anyone, but please think about this.
This also goes for all First Officers as they are Captain "in-training".

Well said - and at least you're "fed up with" and "not fed up of" (sic).
In my organisation we have many fine captains who are more than happy to coach, we also have some woeful individuals whose very presence in the left hand seat is a complete mystery. The very worst of this latter category will also do their very best to pass on their particular brand of bullsh1t and thus perpetuate it, they will argue every excruciatingly minor point, no matter how trivial, or how wrong they may be.
Perhaps some people forget where they came from . . .

A Captain's licence charges him/her with the responsibility for the safety of the aircraft and its' passengers and crew, while most major companies(airlines) will charge the Captain with the additional responsibility for the developement of the junior members of the crew. Your training department has the task of training Captains and First Officers to the MINIMUM standard required by the company and agreed and overseen by the state Aviation Authority. It is therefore accepted that further improvement of skills will take place during normal line operations, but unfortunately not all pilots are good teachers.
The difference between a Captain and a co-pilot is this:-
when you are a co-pilot you go to work wondering which ****you are going to fly with, whereas as a Captain you already know! But not all the **** sit in the left-hand seat!

...And why do newly promoted captains feel they have to act like training captains with random questions about the aircraft, SOP's and comapany policies...?

While a few Captain's might be trying to score 'ugly' points. Try to think that they are really trying to help you. Do you really know SOP's and company policies? In my experience it does take time to get everything logged in the brain box and a little info here and there as an instance/incident occurs is worth more than a tad.
As for FO's they must be certain that they do not give the impression that THEY know it all, for an experienced Captain will surely find you out!

Years ago, .. decades actually, when i was sitting sideways as a 727FE, a crusty old captain told me, over a beer, that when you are flying the a$$hole always sits to your left. As an FE, looking to the left, the FO with his back to you is always pandering to the Captain, laughing at saids stupid jokes. As an FO, you are stuck laughing at the Captains not so funny jokes, while trying to keep them out of trouble, wondering how on this earth did he end up in the left seat. As a Captain you end up seeing your refelction in the window.
Hopefully someday all of you will end up in the left seat. When you look to your left and see your reflection, remember where the a$$hole sits.

to add some E-cents to this thread:
Flying as an FO some time ago I always tried to be ( mentaly) in Left-seat's man shoes and having seen his/her mistakes or / stupid/wise / bizzare / funny decisions/things she or he had done , I always found it easy to justify them.
I used to say to myself " U never know what 's on his/her mind at the time and what she/he is thinking about right now that makes him/ her so busy to fuc..k the things up in the cockpit". We all know it is not only about the flying that counts in that seat. It helped me to get easily through this nice period regardless of anyone I had to cope with ( really few).
Now, I always treat my FO with respect they deserve. I also think of them as the only people to save my life in case I go out...But...
I loathe the guys who have no experience and for some reason got the chance to fly an airliner ( pilot shortage, right man in the right time?)and having collected as little as 200-300 type hours are cheeky enough to asses his/her captain .
The difference is that You- Dear Young FOs ( 98%) have no idea how it is to be on the other side of "Throttle-Border line" while all the captains were the FO in the past( unless born to be captain) and have a better perspective . The proper judgement calls for proper experience.Build Your hours and wait patiently for the day to come and you will be then entitled to asses your ex- captains comparing to Your decisions/behaviours.
