Parallel Runway Swings
I flew as a pax on LH into Frankfurt tonight and landed on 7L I think in an A300.
I am pretty sure we were lined up to land on 7R and then swung over to 7L about 3-5 miles from touchdown. I also noticed an aircraft departing on the cross-runway pretty close in front of us, which might well have caused the switch.
Met was good, so landing could have been visual.
Anyone know if this is standard practise at EDDF, or any other such airports??? And if a departing aircraft on the cross runway could have been the cause for the swing?

Visual switches are common at many airports in the US and occasionally occur in Europe, usually due to a blocked runway or the air traffic controller deciding their isn't enough spacing between aircraft. Sometimes visual switches are offered on an opportunity basis and are accepted in order to reduce taxy times on the ground, which could be the case in FRA. I doubt an aircraft departing runway 18 at FRA would cause the switch.

Swings happen because of the dynamic flow into EDDF, and because the APP-controllers build in space for departures, which might not be needed at exactly that moment.
It easily saves 5 mins blocktime.
Very rarely there is an approaching aircraft going around creating space.

And how about EDDL? Whilst on the approach to 23R was asked if we wanted 23L. "Yes" we said and were cleared. So I said we would visually manouevre for the swing. "You are not allowed to procede non-visually!" replied the tower. "Therefore, we shall non-visually manouevre for 23 Left". And we were so cleared and therefore had to shut our eyes (but we did peek a bit!). Which Muppet writes their rules?
Did it at CDG on sunday, from 09L to 09R, great fun!! Also happens in milan quite often, swinging from 35R tot 35L ,have heard people doing it in FRA as well, but for us its not beneficial, since we park on the victor stands, 07R is often a faster taxi since taxiway C is hardly ever occupied.
